i got a 97 rs eclipse non-turbo..all thats on so far is an exhaust system and a CAI...for x-mas im gonna get aem's tru-time cam gears, and some kinda crank pulley..but i have no idea who makes good crank pulleys..can anybody help me out? :cheers

af/x (howell automotive) makes a nice pully at 30% underdrive and unorthodox makes one at 20% underdrive the unorthodox is a 2 piece and af/x is 1 piece (im pretty sure) they are just about equal despite the 10% difference in drive, more than likely becuase the unorthodox is supposed to be lighter weight. hope that helps

Both are good choices. If you have a large audio system, Unorthodox. If you just want powah, AFX. :shrug

i don't know about the AF/X being not as durable. during the clutch installation, the jackstand holding up the oil pan fell out (well, actually the piece of wood fell out) causing the engine to "fall". when this happened i was like "SHIT!" there were 2 things holding it up: the passanger side motor mount, and the top 1" or so of the AF/X pulley. somehow, it survived. you tell me.

Do some research on Top Fuel Of Japans Pulley. My friend Dougie here on the board has one, and he says that my AFX is overrated, when he held my AFX pully in his hand he said it felt like stock compared to his topfuel, so yea do some research.

well the question you should really ask is hold the stock pulley in one hand and and the afx pulley in the other which is better?

I've never had any really big problems with mine, except occasionally I'll throw a belt. That could be because it wasn't on all the way. So make sure you get that sucka in all the way, it should be like almost touching the timing belt cover.

if you heat that sucka up well in the oven that thing will slip over the crank like butter. Don't try to gun it in unless you have a rediculously powerful impact gun also that thing is in there TIGHT.

The AFX is just a fairly flexible aluminum. Heating it doesn't help the problem. This is a good thing in terms of survivability, but bad because it is more likely to wobble and squeak. I'd be willing to bet your pulley is now wobbling or dented where it hit the unibody. I've dented the AFX a couple times by dropping it accidentally, but was able to bend it back more or less. I've also heard a few people have stripped the threads out of the AFX. The unorthodox uses a harder metal for the crank/threaded part. Neither is "cheap" by any measure though, they're both good.

I have always had a problem with the dact that the AFX fits on that tight. it almost seems that they were machined with too tight of a tolerance. my Top Fuel pulley slid right on with no problems. installed it in just over an hour.

Its not suppose to slide right on. It should be hard to get in there. notive the 420As crank shaft DOES NOT have a key on it. Mostly cuz we can't set timing from the crank but the key also keeps that pulley on there from sliding I bet. No key on the crank shaft for us so you'd want that sucka to grab good so it won't slip. There's a reason why its so hard to put on.

But I will admit after gunning it in the first time its a little too tight to get in there. I was able to put a pulley on my MR2s 4age with not so much trouble with my impact gun. But then again the 4age has a key on the crank.
