lately i've been realizing that my belt has been squealing. i'm not too knowledgable mechanically so i'm not sure how to fix it. can i fix it, do i need to take it to the shop, do i need a new belt. if i can fix it can you please tell me step by step. i don't know what to do. any info will help. thanks guys :thumbsup

i am having the same problem. it does it whenever it is cold. trying to figure out if it is too tight or loose...but anyways its a 14 mm screw, its on the left side of the manifold. it is the small pulley, not sure what it is for. but you will see it. try tighting that and see if that works.

I had/have this same problem. Last winter I took my car to a shop because it was squeeling and they said a little coolant leaked on my belt because of a bad radiator hose clamp, but the belt was still in good shape. They just put a new clamp on the radiator hose for $10. The squeeling stopped...until summer past and it started getting cold again. Now it squeels when it's cold and/or wet outside. I'm thinking now that I'm more experienced with the car I'll just change the belt out, mine does not look loose so I don't think that's it. I tried some of that belt dressing, that is suppose to stop squeeling but it only goes away while I'm spraying it on the belt, once I stop, it starts again.

^^^ LOL, sounds like belt dressing to me. I been havin this problem lately too, although my belts always squeal while I warm my car up. Plus I drive without a front bumper cover on...I think that the belts just squeal if they're wet and/or cold. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to check the tension though. BTW, which pulley is it that takes a 14mm??

to answer ALL of you: your belt(s) are loose, probably just the power steering/ac belt though.

heat=contraction, cold=expantion. that is why belts squeek when you first start the car or on cold days. also humidity can "wet" the belt enough to cause a small squeek if its loose. over-tensioned belts dont squeek, but the provide too much force on the pullies (although its usually minute).

do a search for "squeeky belt" or similar and you should find out how to tighten the ps/ac belt. it takes less than 15 minutes. you may have to wade through a ton of info on this very common problem though, so any specific questions can be posted here, ill be glad to answer.

hahaha, ya i just noticed that too, LOL. x( the point remains the same though, time to tighten the belt.

Just buy new belts spend 20 minutes installing them and you should have no more squeaks.

if it's your first belt change or you don't know what your doing then it will more likely take an hour and some scraped knuckles...

i needed new belts, but mine still squeak some like at start up and for a second if i turn the a/c on...

i prolly just need to tighten them again though...

first try to tighen the pully not too much, do a little at a time then check to see if it squeaks... if it does then tighen it some more...

ohh, if you look at the belts find the pully that the flat part of the belt goes around that is the tensioner pully, tighen the bolt on the front of that pully to tighten...

The power steering bracket is a poor design, therefore the pulley is not inline with the other pulleys. I go through belts about every 10k miles. The most common problem with the squeeking is on the ps pulley, the belt will come off the side of the pulley one rib on the belt. It usually stays on the other pulleys. It hangs off towards the right of the car. Once it does this, the belt has stretched enough on that side to let it keep doing it. I've been putting mine back on every morning for the last week and a half, I hav'nt had time to go get another one. It only takes like 2 min to do. If they do that long enough the end that hangs will shread and start slapping, sounds like a bad lifter tap. It always happens to me when im runnin high r's so it can make you nervous for a sec. As far as expanding and contracting goes, I dont really think that rubber really does that much if any, just hardens in the cold and gets less grip and get softer in the summer and grips. Also dont tighten them too much because it will cause premature bearing failure on the idler pulley, ps bearing, mabye even a little more stress on the main bearing on on the crankshaft.

I've had the same problem as 97xtc also. My ps/ac belt would shred apart every so often and I also got that squeeling noise. It would go away after I'd tighten the belts but after I tightened them the belts would just shred apart. So I figured there was something wrong with tensioner pulley. So I ordered a new bearing for the tensioner pulley, havent had a problem since no squeeling and no belt shredding. Hope that helps

You can remove the whole tensioner pully setup, and just buy a shorter belt. Like I did. You just tension it by the power steering assembly. Never heard a squeel from that belt again!:-)

OVERTIGHTENED BELTS WILL SQUEEK. they will also be accomponied by a noticeable lack of power.
