62330, Wierd noise from the head. Posted by jerseystyle1, Oct-30-03 06:18 AM
It's almost like tapping/rattling but it only does it around 3k RPM tp about 5K RPM. It doesn't do it if I just rev the motor, only hen I am actually driving. I definitly think it is coming from under the valve cover and I going to pull it soon to check. Any ideas as to what it might be?:shrug

yeah i've got some noise too, i'm thinking head also because if it was bottom end, i would have had my motor puke all over the road by now. mine starts only under load, and doesn't start until around 2500-3000 rpm's all the way up.
but only when giving it gas (or turning sharply).
Jersey, is your prob similar to mine? like a light tapping/rapping sound?

I think we have the same exact problem. Where are all the engine "gurus" when you need them. What are your plans to find out what the problem is??? It is REALLY annoying and it is pretty fucking loud! ;(

i had that same problem in a 420A neon i had, it was a 95 with 78,000 miles on it and i started to hear that same noise you guys are talking about, my uncle and i took off the valve cover and started taking apart the engine and it was the bearings....if thats what u guys got, then its time for a rebuild i'd say...if not, sorry i tried hehe :thumbsup

Yeah, it's definitley coming from the head and I doubt it's the Cam bearings.

is your head all factory? if so how many miles are on it? mine is all stock and i just turned 165xxx the other day... so if you are in the same boat, maybe something isn't working correctly?
changed VC gasket a couple of months ago, and everything "looked" ok, but then again i don't know what i'm looking for!

I think the sound you guys are talking about is the lifters. I replaced my lifters/rockers with the updated PT style ones and no more noises.
