well, some of you may have read my posts about my noen foe around my town: 1 draw, 1 loss (mine). He had his girl the first time so probably would have been 2 losses...anyway, ran into him tonight at the parts store and we chated. his 420a has the intake in the front and header in the rear. hes got crane ignition something or other, cams with adj. gears, headers, 2.5in exhaust, and juiced up computer, all on top of his 150 base hp, no wonder i lost.(no boost or squeeze though)
Heres where you gurus come in: he told me some stuff that i need some info/clarification on... his stock TB was 48mm, now bored to 52mm and he says there is a direct bolt on 60mm TB from a 96 jeep. He has a computer from modernperformance.com. i didnt think we had on yet! is there that much design difference between his 420a and mine, that i cant use a spiced up computer?
im workin on a N20 kit now, but some of this other stuff wouldnt hurt either...fill me in guys. thanks!

ps-please! no "screw that, get turbo" talk. i know!!! A. theres more than one way to skin a cat, & B. im not going to be that fiancialy free for a very long time. bits and peices here and there are easy to get pass the misses, but not $3000.00+. thanx

WOW!! im kinda pissed!! there is so much more shit for the freakin neon then the eclipse. Dem fargin icehole bastages!!!!

The computer thing is right. but if you have an E-prom on your ecm get a lap top. Contact GUDE performance (cams throttle body, 4 into 1 header) and alot of other things. change the pistons to 10:5:1 compression from Forward motion they have everything in forged componets. Get the head decked ported and polished along with the intake manifold. Email-me for anymore ideas I got most of these things now working on 14. to 13.5 e.t.'s

Modern Performance sells a 60mm TB for the Neon, but it won't work on our cars. I already tried route...

Here it is though http://modernperformance.com/dcx/mpx_tb.htm

Me too, Gude shows no gains on a dyno is what I heard. . . either way you can piece together a head and high compression piston package that will work to give you some power. Thats what I am working on for mine. 12.4:1 compression on pump gas.

Yes, but it has not been done on our motor and will not fit without some work. The neons came with two different size TB's from the factory. Our car already has a 52mm. The best thing you could do is bore it out to 55m as that is all the stock manifold can really flow without some extra work to widen it out.

yes. they are that different, hence his making 150hp stock and ours making 140hp stock.

Also, look how simple the setup Todd is running and he is busting 15.5's. If it were me, I would just copy whatever he is doing. ;-) No reason to reinvent the wheel.

6172, why, thank you!

The neon is lighter, al neons have different computers than our cars, and the DOHC version gets some of that extra power becasue it uses 93 octane (more advanced timing from the factory). So, taking one on is tough. Even a SOHC with a manual, if modded right, is tough because of the weight advantage. (I've seen one guy run 14's with his stripped down SOHC with alot of mods, still streetable). But if they have auto trannies you can usually really kill them, since they are geared worse than our auto trannies (they have 3 speeds).

Actually, I wouldn't copy what I've done "exactly." Get the 4 into 1 header instead of a 4 to 2 to 1. Don't forget, lots of launching practice, some tuning of tires and SAFC, and run on a nice cold day and you should do well. (I certainly don't have one of those "super" motors from the factory, either. Just takes a little of everything added together.)

thanks guys for all the info. im not that far off form what you(todd) have for mods. Except now i just bought a NX gen X kit for 450.00, and the pacesetter header is on the way. so hopefully soon i can be a contender...

The bottom end of the motors is the same and so is the valvetrain. So any of these parts you can use for a Neon. Computer, Cams, intakes, header etc, don't work. The Neons also stock have the advantage of a stock 2 1/4" exhaust. So even with a headers our's reduces to 2" to mate up to the stock cat. I want to see when I do my exhaust if I can modify the collector on my header.

I'd be curious to see if a Neon ECU could work though. Anybody around Illinois with a 95? I'll bring my 95 420A Neon ECU out and we can try to wire it in...

One other thing, run with a set of stock 14 inch alloy rims, the car will be faster in a straight line with them on. They WILL make a noticeable difference.

And Mike, I though all Neons had 2 inch exhausts. From what I've read the new neon R/Ts with SOHC 150 hp get some of that extra HP by increasing the stock exhaust size from 2 inch to 2 1/4 inch.

Do mean by switching to the DOHC muffler? which does them an increase in hp.

You can check with the guys at Neons.org but I could swear they said it was 2 1/4" and when I did the Dynomax cat-back on my Neon the piping did not look like a 1/2" difference at the adapter, and I "think" I measured the pipe at the muffler... damn now I guess I might have to crawl under mine and check... since I think she needs a cat anyway... well now I'm just rambling

Posted by Michael_97RS, Nov-05-01 01:00 PM
I forgot to memntion the Neons have an overall tire diameter advantage: 185/65R-14 to our 195/70R-14. Which effectly give sthe Neon a better gear ratio.
