61346, cutting resonator out, effects? Posted by distort, Oct-13-03 11:29 AM
has anyone cut their resonator out? i asked a muffler shop to hollow my cat and they said they wouldnt touch it but they would cut my resonator off and it would make my car louder. my friend in his civic cut his off and it is pretty loud but i dont know how it will sound on an eclipse. i have a n1 style muffler, sounds great, really deep, just needs more volumne.

I don't think there are any performance benefits from cutting it off, it's not restrictive in anyway like the cat. is. Why would you want you car to be louder than it already is with the exhaust? That pretty stupid IMO, but whatever floats your boat man...the only thing I can say is just get a test pipe or high-flow cat.:thumbsup

If you get the OBX, or any round, straight through muffler for that matter, and cut out your resonator, it will sound like a fart can. Really. That muffler alone should be lound enough for you, with the resonator still in there. I'd say get the muffler you want first, then decide if you want it louder..

well i have a N1 knockoff muffler. it looks great, sounds great, but in 3rd gear cruising with barely any gas down i cant hear it, i have to hit 4k rpms to even hear it. if i rev it tho or something it sounds loud, and it has no treble to it what so ever. i want something ppl can hear when i go past them. so im thinking either, apexi n1 muffler for $210 and see how that goes, or a pacesetter high flow cat from planetperformance for $130. id rather spend $$ on something else but this is just not loud enough for me.

High flow cat and full cat-back piping, 2.25" or 2.5" piping will increase the volume on the exhaust also.

I love the sound of my exaust, but its too loud for me. It sounds really deep. I have 2.5 inch pipe from the turbo back no resonator no cat and a straight through muffler. highly illegal, but with the turbo its gives extra ponies.

aight tnx for the info, im going to order a pacesetter high flow cat and see how that goes and check on custom piping, hopefully i wont have to do anything else.

If you want high flow look at powercore cats. Really good quality part. I posted about it before go to Landspeedracing.com and check it out then call Matt at LandSpeed and tell him I sent you. He knows me as DSMkarz from there forum. He should be able to cut a good deal:thumbsup Trust me just a high flow cat will amke it loud enough.

you want it to be loud so you can pass by people and look cool? Must love the fly bys. You will eventually get annoyed at the noise when driving on the highways.

U dont want to cut your resonator out, trust, i had the same problem. Sounded real ricey and rattling at high rpms, you will hate it. I had to take out the straight piping and put in a cherry bomb just to get rid of it..U DO NOT WANT TO CUT IT...if u want loud, get a glasspack(cherrybomb) with an OBX B3 muffler, high flow cat, headers, downpipe and youll be good to go..also a short ram intake if u can, thatll make ure engine sound mean. Get that setup and you need not go louder..trust, I was in the same position as you, save ure self!

You can gut your own cat, all you need to do is unbolt the cat and then take a really long screwdriver and gut it all out. it is going to make a mess when you start it up to get everthing out, but hey it worked for me! :thumbsup

well I just took the turbo off of my car and am running around with stock downpipe connected to a 3 inch exhaust with a resonator haha and it has a tad of the fart cannon sound maybe a fart pistol hehe. Don't take the resonator out, just change the muffler if you don't have a performance one yet, that's a good mod and it sounds pretty good.

go to www.summitracing.com look into mufflers, and order the 16in dynomax bullet muffler, get two 2.5 2 bolt flanges, and use that in place of ur cat, thats what i did. i have the n1 catback, and ask anyone whos heard my car, it sounds awesome, no rasp whatsoever. email me at aemrs@hotmail.com ill tell you exactly how to make it. the muffler is basically a race only resonator, and its around 35$

same here, when i got my exhaust worked on i had the shop cut the resonator off, gut the cat, and weld on my straight though muffler...
two days later i went back and had them weld in a new resonator....
and it sounds great, now i have a test pipe which got rid of some the raspiness....
PLEASE DON'T CUT YOUR RESONATOR OFF!!!

ok i wont be cutting my resonator because i do NOT want a honda pitched sound =). eclipses have a deep mean sound and i want to keep that going. if i buy a new muffler it will be a real apexi n1 instead of my knockoff, but im trying to avoid having to spend $200+ on a new muffler. ill be ordering the pacesetter highflow cat for $130 at planetperformance after i sell my 95rs and see how that goes. i dont need extremely loud, i just want it to be heard. if the cat doesnt take care of that problem, then i guess ill have to buy the apexi =\. my car sounds great now, really low no treble in it what so ever, i love it. just a tad on the quiet side in 3rd gear. 1st and 2nd are nice tho =P. we'll see, ill post up some results after i get the cat installed but it will be a few weeks, next paycheck going to more subs and interior things.
