Im back, I fixed the cam seals, and I know that Im real stupid, but when I put the cams and gears in I only eyeballed the position they were supposed to be in and I didn't mark the exact degree. :thumbsdown Well, my car idles like a 69 chevy nova (whatever that means??!!)}( It has an aggressive lope in it. It's not pinging or ticking, it just idles rough. My question is, should I advance/retard the exhaust/intake? Im not sure which cam is off and I was wondering if you could tell by the symptoms?:shrug

You need to retime the engine. The crank TDC mark is behiond the crank pulley. Line that one up an dthe two cam sprocket marks and you ar egood to go.

yeah...thats going to suck to tear it all apart again, but it needs to be done.... did you just line up your cams and not the crank?... you should be damn happy it didnt collide with your valves

I put the new cams and cam gears in at what looked like the same angle the stock ones were it but I didn't do it to the precise degree, I just eyeballed it.

It runs good, it just idles kinda aggressive. My car now has a killer pull on low end, especially in 1st gear but is lacking a bit in top end.

In order to time it, I would have to take the whole thing apart again???;(

Thanks for the help guys, this is the first time I had seen under the valve cover so I didn't screw up too bad considering how much experience I have.:shrug

the first time i had to mess with the timing belt was on my 1g turbo talon.....after readjusting evertything and putting it back together, i found out the hard way that my tensioner was bad....that sucked

Are the cams supposed to be 180 degrees apart in stock specs? (Is the intake cam supposed to be fully open when the exhaust is fully closed or is there an advance or retard on that? The reason Im asking is because I was told our cars have a 12 degree timing advance, but I didn't know if that dealt with the valve overlap or ignition timing. You told me to look at the crank and line up the etchings on it with the cams??? Is there a mark for the intake and a seperate mark for the exhaust cam?:9

To time the motor, you need to see *3* timing marks.

One on each cam sprocket, lined up on the inside, level with the head.

One on the crank sprocket. The only way to see the crank sprocket timing mark is to remove the crankshaft pulley or whatever UDP you might have.

I like the word sprocket.

yup, i'll be timing my engine in a day or two. i'm in the middle of my headgasket install so i'll be timing soon. my haynes manual has been a nice help. lickscissors, who is helping me with my headgasket install, has a chiltons and that has alot of good stuff in it too. if you don't have a haynes or chiltons manual then you should get one, it'll make things much easier.:thumbsup
