61233, Oil leak after cam install, please help!!!
Posted by anotherblitzedeclipse, Oct-11-03 11:27 AM
Okay, I installed my crane cams yesterday and AEM cam gears, I customized my timing belt cover so it shows the cam gears. I started my car up and drove it a block when it started smoking under the hood. Oil is splattering out from where the cams end and the cam gears start. Help me! How can I fix this? Is there any specific proceedure Im supposed to do to seal it? I used the old plastic rings that were on my camshafts but I dont really remember how far you push them back or which direction the flat end is supposed to face.

Also, do you have to take the timing belt off to adjust the timing gears???

replace the cam seals

you should always use new seals,etc.. when messing with engine parts

and yes you will have to take the timing gears off to get to the seals.

Or it could be your valve cover leaking right on top of the cam lumps at each end

same thing had to me also. I just moved the cam seals in closer. They are really cheap. Mine were new.

cam seals are the hard plastic rings with the spring inside of them right? x(

Where do they go? before, under or after the lump that you were talking about that holds the cams in at the end right by the cam gears???

My seals look fine do I have to replace them??? :rolleyes

The question earlier is do I have to take the belt off to adjust the AEM cam gears???

Yes the seals with the springs in them. They go behind the cover pushed back as far as you can in the recess for them. hollow side facinf in towards the motor.

Yes, they are cheap, and they like to leak when removed. Replace them while everything is off... again.

No, not to adujust cam gears that's what the outewr bolt are for loosen adjust and tighten. But you're going to have to takle the belt down and tear it down to do the cam seals.
