61162, How do i get the motor to TDC? Posted by ughhhead, Oct-10-03 08:46 AM
i don't know how to get the motor to tdc or if it's even that crutial. right now the tdc is about 180 degrees off. the rear cam timing mark is at 12 oclock, and the front cam timing mark is at about 6 oclock. does this make a huge difference as long as i don't move anything? another thing... i had my timing belt done 2 weeks ago and they screwed up the timing. it looks to me like the front cam gear is off about 2 teeth. i would really like to adjust my timing so that my timing is correct and my car doesn't run like garbage anymore, it would be good if someone could give me some insight on that too. with all that being said... HELP!... here are some pictures to help you help me out. thanks a whole bunch!!:thumbsup

Put the crank pulley bolt back in and turn it until it gets to TDC. Then when you go to put everything back together follow the Chiltons directions. It's a little more difficult doing it in the car, but you can do it :thumbsup I am a slacker today... so if you need more help hit me up on AIM my screen name is MeHo3.

what he said^^^. the vfaq says you may have to turn your crank up to 6 full revolutions to get your motor to tdc. it is crucial that your motor be at tdc before you remove your old belt. if not, you will have no reference to where your belt "should" be as far as timing is concerned. if not, you can seriously screw something up. the tdc marks are there for a reason, mightaswell use them. good luck. i am getting ready to do a 4g timing belt. it will suck because i have no experience doing motor work yet. oh well, vfaq is my friend. (as stated by another member.:bowdown)

If you intake manifold is on, I'm willing to bet that you have not disconnected those black brackets on the back side of the engine that connect the lower intake plenum to the block. Also, make sure you have removed both engine hoist brackets.

You dont need to turn the crank 6 times, 4 times, or whatever to get it to TDC. Just rotate the crank so that the arrow on the timing belt gear is matching up with the arrow on the block(oil pump housing). Only rotate the crank clockwise. Whenever i do timing belt work, i start off by putting the arrow on the timing belt gear at the 9 o'clock position. This means that NONE of the pistons are at TDC, and no risk of hitting the vales. You can rotate your cams to your hearts content, and you will be fine. Put the crank at 9 o'clock, THEN take off the belt, and do your thing. When putting the belt back on, or setting the timing, first be sure the crank is at the same spot, then rotate your cams to line up the marks, THEN turn the crank clockwise from 9 o'clock to the 12 o'clock, to line up the TDC arrows..

take the first sprak plug out, stick a screw driver in there and feel the piston at TDC. works for me.....

I've always only turned the crank clockwise, but why can't you go ccw with it?

The crank rotated 2 times for every 1 cam gear rotation, you should never have to rotate the crank more than that, if it takes you 6 times I suggest a trip to your local eye doctor.

Smooth idle? We don't need no stinking smooth idle.

it figures, i THOUGHT i had the intake manifold unbolted. i didn't, there was the one bolt on the passenger side back of the manifold. oh well this is my first time doing this stuff. gimme a break. haha. i'm gettin my head back tonight after i'm out of school, anyone want to give me some tips on how to put in valve stem seals and cams. :thumbsup

I think it has something to do with how the retaining tab is positioned on all the bearings. If you turn it clockwise, the tab squarely hits metal and won't spin, but counterclockwise is ramped so it could somehow mess up the bearings? Just a guess.

I've turned the crank counterclockwise. Turning counter clockwise with fighting compression you are likely to loosen the crank bolt unless you have really tightened it down, and why would you with teh crank pulley off.
