61098, What is your oil psi?
Posted by Dirty, Oct-09-03 02:11 PM
I might be paranoid, but since I got my car back together, I've been looking at my gauges constantly and I'm just curious. My oil psi is around 60-75 at WOT, around 50psi at cruising speeds, but what I'm concerned about it at idle its around 12-14psi. I can't remember what it's usually at cause I haven't driven it for awhile. What is normal for you guys?

Yeah I was a bit worried too when I put in my oil press. gauge, but your numbers seem to be normal. I idle at about 10psi and a little lower when I run the car hard for an extended period.

if im at idle.. im around 25psi.. if im crusing or at wot.. im at 50psi. no oil leaks.. no burning anything.. car runs good.

explain that ;) might have something to do with the fact that its beefed up.

I never see anything under 21 psi at idle, fully warmed up. At cruising, i see around 55-60, and at wot, higher rpms, 60-75. 11 psi just sounds a bit low to me? BTW, I have a rebuilt, stock oil pump..

Oil pressures vary based on many factors. You'll normally see quite a difference in pressures when comparing the stock pump and Melling pump too.

Pressures will be higher when the engine's cold also. Oil weight plays into the equation as well.

Well my oil psi gauge just went dead on me yesterday. I was freaking out cause I looked over at it and that bitch was on 0. After figuring out that it was the gauge or sensor and not an engine problem I had to continue my trip. What could be some reasons for this to happen. I had just reinstalled everything using teflon paste and I know none of it got on the inside of the fittings. It worked for 3 days, before it went to shit.

so are you saying that the melling is higher psi than stock, or vice versa?

i have a melling oil pump and i run mobil 1 15w-50 oil. at idle when the engine is warmed up it doesn't really go very far below 25 psi of oil pressure. above 3000 rpm's it's up around 60 psi of oil.

Oil pressure is also affected by such things as bearing to journal clearances. Tight clearances on the rod and main bearings will also increase oil pressure. There are a lot of things that can have an effect on oil pressure.
