ok I dread taking off that pulley and even more installing it. I didn't install it when i first go it had a shop do it but I had to do it when I rebuilt my engine and I tried to use an impact gun to get that sucka in and man my impact gun wasn't enough I had to borrow my uncles impact gun just to get it all the way on. Felt like the crank or bolt were gonna explode.

but I just finished re-installing my timing belt and I tried baking the pulley again (tried the 1st time but didn't work) and I baked that sucka good like for 15 mins til I could smell something burning haha. Then I put some gloves on and sprinted to my car and BAM thing slides in all the way no problem. Yeesh had I known it was this easy I woulda done it that last time. So when you bake it bake it good. That's the best way in my opinion, the impact gun isn't powerful enough and doing it by hand bwahaha forget that.

man only 15 min. i heard of people baking it for like 2-3 hours whatever works though

you CAN get longer bolts to help push it on, but from what i've heard, you'll be either traveling for days just to try and find those bolts or you'll be waiting for days for some hardware store to order them. they're hella hard to find.

good work.. on my last install I did not have an oven handy and i made the mistake of just taking a blowtorch to it.. well needless to say it warped and now my belts squeak like there is no tomorrow. hehe. time for a new pulley.

If you EVER have problems putting an AF-X pulley on, you simply did not bake it long enough!!! These things arn't hard to install.

I am just getting mine put on, I took mine to a local mechanic (NAPA) earlier this morning. They said they would get to it around 2.. I was wondering.. do mechanic garages usually have all the tools for this kinda stuff? I see that you have to bake it.. Do you NEED to bake it if you have the right tools?

instead of also waiting for the oven time, you can also use a torch and heat the center of the pulley as well for like 1-2min and that's it...slide it right in.

noooo don't do that^^^ that is what I did and it warped the pulley. the pulley is aluminum and ti will not expand and contract evenly if you are only applying heat to one part of it.

well then you must've done it wrong, i used the propane torch just heat the center at a circular motion till it glowed a bit, and that was it. no warping and i had that pulley on for already 30,000mi.

Nope! A longer grade 10 bolt and 300lbft impact wrench will pull it on without any heating or effort. These are things any shop would have.

yeah that's what I tried the first time. A longer bolt and my cheap 30 dollar impact gun and I was gunning that sucka in for like an hour waiting for the compressor to catch up. In the end I had to borrow my uncles 150 ft/lb gun and that got it in with a couple tries. It scary feels like the bolts gonna bust or the crank O_o I tried heating it with a torch also that didn't work, wound up melting some of the timin cover :P

even the dude at the shop that installed mine when I got it didn't get it in all the way, cuz I would still shred a belt now and then. Baking the way to go :thumbsup

LOL! i didn't know you had to bake it that long. i just put it into the oven until it got up to 500* and ran outside, slipped on maybe a 1/16th an inch. probably until the bevel in the pulley levels off. then i hit it for a while with a rubber hammer(not a good idea) and then torched it. hehe, then beat it, then got the stock bolt on and stripped out the outter most thread, heated it, beat it, then i was able to grab enough threads to pull it on. IF ANYONE DOES WHAT I DID YOU ARE ASKING FOR TROUBLE!!!!!!!! i did just about everything wrong. just heat the mother up for a couple hours, just like your cookin a roast ;)

When i put mine in i just heated it with a propane torch for about 5 minutes and it slid right on...then used a ratchet to tighten the bolt all the way.... total of about 15 minutes on the install and dont have any squeaks or anything (I did catch a pair of my g/f's mom's oven mitts on fire in the process tho LOL).

Baking it longer keeps you from:
1) having to try other methods because it will go ALL the way on
2) warping it by beating it (or damaging your thrust bearings)
3) warping it with a torch
4) having to find that rare ass extra long bolt

I just got my car back from the shop a couple hours ago and wow I love the difference.... revs a hell of a lot faster. :thumbsup

Im not sure how you could warp it with a torch...the only part you heat is the very center, which is very small and can be heated uniformly with ease. While you are doing this you should have a bag of ice placed on the crank-snout. Then it slides right on and while ir's cooling down- tighten the crank bolt. Once it cools down completely, place the rest of the pulley on the center piece and tighten the three allen screws that hold it together. Basically- follow the directions that come with the pulley and its extremely easy

Hmm... I didn't know you could take it apart, I thought the center was pressed in.

haha yeah that happened to me the first time. I heated it up but not long enough and ran to the garage and it came on a tiny bit and it cooled down so too bad won't go out anymore haha.

I guess just bake it till you see smoke coming from it haha, that's practically what happened. Then again the smoke coming from it was probably the oil, whiteout, and anti seize libricant on it. :P

Longer bolt for crank, a couple of hardened bolts to thread into the pulley, a big screwdrive. Some 1/2" exntension, 19mm socket and an 18" breaker bar. Slides on like butter.

About how much horsepower do you think you guys gained? Whould it be worth the $200 or so the buy the pulley?

ok this first question is related to the afx udp... and that is... when you bake the pulley, how long do you bake if for and for how long? the second question is about the bolt... what is the size of the udp bolt. i bent mine tonight while taking off my udp to do my head gasket. where can i get that bolt at, is it as hard to find as the longer version of that bolt?

It's M12. Pretty much get the longest one you can find. You can always shorten it w/ washers (or the closed end of a wrench). I got mine at Ace Hardware.

how long do you bake that damn thing for, i've seen 15 mins, but thats what i did mine for and it went on a little bit then stopped and i kept screwing it on and finally went on all the way (i think)

leave the bastard in there till she be a smokin!!!!! just like hades did. bake it for a couple hours. give the metal time to expand. i['m a dumbass for not thinking of that before.....
