6098, Clutch went out AGAIN @ 2GNT meet

First of all I want to thank all the of you at the meet today who helped me get my car out of traffic

(I know there was more but I cant remember all your names)
I had just got my car back on Tuesday after about 3weeks of not having it because my old clutch was being replaced. Well yesterday I took my car to semi-high Rpms (5k-6.3k)in 1st,2nd, and 3rd gear. Then I got off the freeway and into a Blockbuster parking lot and I heard a "clunk" sound while in first gear. I really didnt think anything of it. Later that night I went to this girls house to watch the movie and while leaving, the clutch seemed to slip a little and I smelled a little burned clutch but then it went away completely for the whole night.

Well today me and my sister headed out for the 2GNT meet at Speedzone and on the way there, the same clunking came back. I really wanted to go so I just figured I would take it back to the mechanic ASAP. When I got off on Fullerton, the sound was very evident. At the meet, I let Eric97GS drive my car around the lot and he said if was definately my clutch.

When I was driving off the parking lot to go home, I was having a hard time shifting gears and then for the second time in a month, my clutch pedal fell to the floor and I lost all ability to shift. I coasted the car into a parking lot and shut the car off. When I started it back up, it was like nothing had happened.

I went back to the meet and most of the guys were still there and told them what had just happened. Juan was extremely nice and offered to drive me home. In the meantime my sister was in my car and called my dad who was working in LA today and just happened to be about 4-5 min away and said he would follow me home.

When I was about to leave the lot again, my clutch died again and I tried starting it again and just couldnt. BTW I was blocking traffic and then my dad happened to pull up just in time. He tried to help me push it put it was on an incline and it made it almost impossible. Then I see all the 2GNT guys coming over and they were able to help me out of the way of traffic. No way me and my dad could of done this without you guys.

Well, we figured that there was a leak of clutch fluid and that the mechanic didnt do something right. So my dad went out and bought brake fluid and we bled the car. After we were done...nothing, it still did not work and would not go into gear. My dad left me there, took my sister home and went to rent something to tow me home. He went back to Moreno Valley (about 45miles away) but the guy at the rental shop said he needed to add lights to the back of my car and that it was close to closing time and they didnt want to do it.

So my dad drives all the way back to Speedzone and calls AAA and has my car towed to my Aunts house in La Puente. Now my car is sitting in her garage and I dont know when or how I will bring it back out to Moreno Valley. My dad said that maybe on Monday he can rent the part to tow my car with his truck.

Does anyone have any clue why this is happening? Was it really the mechanics fault? Or could I have done something? It sucks not having your car for 3weeks, getting it back for 4days and then not knowing when you'll next be driving it.

Again thanks a lot for all your help,
James

If you're pushing in the clutch and nothing is happening, it's a hydralics problem. Something is leaking somewhere..

It would be my intial assumption. Of course, if you're pushing in the clutch and you hear odd noises coming from the transimssion area, pops, grinds, rattling metalic noises.. (and especially if you have a habit of, like me, riding your clutch pedal with that foot) it could be the splines on your clutch have worn through and gave out. If that happened, your throwout bearing will move with the clutch fork, but mill contact nothing to disengage the clutch because all the slines are sheared/worn off.

Hope i can help you. It's either a clutch issue or a hydralics issue. Give me some details!

yeah i had that noise that you just talked about on my old clutch. A mettalic, rattling sound. (I dont know if you remember me but I posted about 4weeks ago under the name Weezle but I lost my password, and KaptinKllgore said that it was my shifter bushings). Im not sure when I'll next see my car but I am taking it straight to the mechanic who installed the new clutch and telling him I expect the problem to be corrected at no cost. Am I correct in taking this approach with the mechanic? Do I have any legal backing on this?

There are other moderators that can give unofficial undocumented disclaimered legal advice..

But yeah, i'd say do it. They did the work, it's broke, they need to fix go.

Keep us informed!.

Oh yeah, One more thing, I dont think it could be wear on the clutch because I had it on the car for less than 5days

can somebody explain in full detail what riding the clutch is? I just burned my clutch out and then got a new one, now I know that dropping the clutch and high rpms is bad, and trying to chirp the tires in transition to 2nd gear, but what is riding the clutch? If the clutch is all the way down, isn't the car in neutral no matter what gear its in? Am I wrong? hey darkone, I'll let you answer this one and then I'll give you a scenario...

I have no idea what it means, but maybe it's this...like suppose you're cruising at 65 mph on the freeway and then push the clutch in so it's in neutral. But then when you let the clutch out, it grabs the gear and jumps from 1000 rpm back up to about 2500. My friend's told me you should actually rev your motor before you let the clutch out so that your rpm's will match your speed. Maybe I'm talking about something totally off though, since I have an auto.

James, good luck with your car. I think that if you just paid to have it fixed, and if it's anything related to the clutch install, then the mechanic should be responsible for it. Most places have at least a 10000 mile warranty, and it's only been one week since you got the clutch replaced. It seems HIGHLY unlikely that something else would cause it since you had just gotten your clutch done - I would assume it's the mechanic's responsibility to take care of it since you paid him to fix your clutch, and it's obviously not fixed. Good luck.

Thanks again Marcus for the exhaust. This will be my first performance mod. I was just wondering what you had said when I asked if I would notice any difference in performace and is it significantly louder than stock(I know you told me but I totally forgot). Also is it what you call a "cat-back" exhaust? Hopefully I'll be able to have it on soon so I can test it out.

One last thing Marcus, Is it Ok if I use one of the pictures of my car from your website to use for my sig? and do you know of any websites where I can link my pictures from?

hehe tell your sister thanks. She must like blue and purple huh? The exhaust is louder than stock, and did perform a bit better, but I can't really say how much. That exhaust is just from the flange-back. A Cat-back exhaust goes from the catalytic converter on back. I was gonna get a cat=back, but then the muffler shop said that the stock bends are better than what they could make using press-bent piping. So I think that for a nonturbo car, it's cool to stick with the stock piping from the cat up to the flange, unless you have $500 to spend on a greddy catback. Good luck with the car, and if you have jack stands, I would try to see if you could install that muffler yourself since it's just a bolt on job. The only hard part is if the stock bolts are rusted really tight (which they might be) so you may want air tools to loosen them...

OH and ya, just use any pic of your car you want, you can actually just link it from my site if you want. Tell me which picture you want, and I can give you the URL to link to, or you can just right click the bid picture and click Properties to see the URL to copy and paste into your signature.

Hey I just wanted to say best of luck with your car. I wish I could have told you what was going on but what we noticed when you drove off was that you could definantly hear some sort of metal to metal sound when you left for the first time.

My guess is your clutch will be in perfect shape when they take it apart (And if it is worn out then either you clutch slave cyl had already failed or the pedal asjustment was too low, either will have the effect of riding the clutch full time). If there was no fluid in the clutch slave cylinder reservior then the clutch slave cyl will likely need replacement (mine has failed numerous times and leaks now I just check it frequently so it doesn't all leak out. once it all leaks out its too late). That wont make any noises just leave you stranded and unable to shift (you can drive in 1rst or 2nd but everytime you come to a stop you have to stall the car with the brakes, start the car while its in gear and roll off engaged. not a very smooth way to leave a stop). The noise could be anything including the tranny but until you pull it no one can be sure. Its only a matter of time before my slave cyl fails completely leaving me stranded but then again I'm used to breaking down frequently.

Yeah Stan, thats exactly how it was happened. My dad talked to the mechanic this morning and he claims that he installed everything perfectly and that it was most likely my fault because he has seen me before driving on the street and I took off to fast. He said that I didnt break in the clutch easy. He is going to look at it but cant "guarantee" any thing.

Hey James, sorry but I had to delete the larger pictures on my site, because I am going over the space limit. Can you link to the smaller picture that is only about 30 kb in size? Thanks.

Marcus: Which pictures are only 30kb? Are there any with my car in it? Thanks in advance

Stan: Again my dad talked to the mechanic who worked on my clutch today and he said that based on the symptoms, it most likely is the master clyinder. My dad told him what you said had happened to your car. He said that he would do the labor for free since he did not catch it earlier but I would have to pay for the parts. I noticed you said that the dealer charged you $200 but do you have any idea how much just the parts would cost?

Hey James, just go back again to the site, http://www.importvenom.com. Click on Events, then Click on 2GNT Meet. Then when you see the picture of your car, click on it. It will bring up another web page with a larger picture of your car. Then right click that picture, and it will give you the URL to put in your signature. It's the exact same picture, just smaller in size, and less web space taken up. Also loads faster too. Try it out and let me know if you have any probs...

I should have asked you to take a pic. of my car for me, I would have paid you to. I don't have anything to link to either.

hey thats cool thanks, I just thought I would pay because you would be holding onto that pic at your website, unless you can help me create my own. The directions on website creating don't make any sense. But thanks man

Ya no prob. Creating a website is actually pretty easy if you use a tool like Homestead or Yahoo Geocities provides. You can just drag and drop all your stuff. But most services don't let you link pictures onto other web sites (such as to use for your signature). I have to thank Aaron for the hosting because I am using his web space right now...

Hey marcus for some reason the pic in my sig is not working. Do you think you can post the address for the picture of my car with the two GSXs in the background? I still have the same address every time I go to importvenom.com. Thanks and Im still not sure when I'll get back my car but I bought two clutch cylinder kits and the mechanic who installed the clutch is going to put them on. Hopefully Ill have my exhaust and car running by next week!

I left a space between the "h" and "ttp" so it won't display the image in this post. Just delete the space when you put it in your signature. Below is the pic:

dood, thanx a lot it works. For some reason I kept getting the same address as before and nothing was working.

Also does anyone know how much two clutch cylinders should cost? Stan? Or have any clue about the price of labor?

And yeah I would definately be down for another 2gnt meet sometime during winter break(If my car is running). Any ideas of anything going on? And Marcus, maybe by then I will have enough money to get the intake we were talking about.
