i was wondering if anyone has used it yet or know anyone that has. last i heard there was one for us that was made. i'd like to know how good it works and peoples opinions, etc. i like the feature where you can move the red line. good thing to have with bigger turbos.

AEM made a Universal one, and one specific for the 2G 4G63 turbo's. So if you can find someone to install and tune the universal one, I'd say its not too bad, not too bad.

woohoo! i finally got a reply!:P
i didn't know that they made a universal one, i remember someone saying that there was one for the 420a, or someone had said something to that sort. maybe they were wrong. that just seems like the best tuning option to me, anyone else have any opinions on stand alones?

I don't know how certain I would be about the availability of the AEM system, but I DO know you're asking for trouble unless you have the critical base line set up for it. You'll be lucky if you can get it to turn over let alone idle.

General consensus here is that for the amount of work required to get it up and running, it's not worth the money. If you did get it and you did get a decent baseline for others to use, you might be somewhat of a hero.

If you have free access to a dyno and nerves of steel, go for it!

well this would be later on when i got my settlement and had the money to spare. but what do you think, if i could get it to have a good baseline, would it be a good or the best tuning option? i mean with a bigger turbo you need the higher redline and i don't know of another stand alone that offers that.

the afx ecu raises the redline, and you dont NEED a higher redline with a turbo. also, afx is sold through howellautomotive, and i wont buy from them again... ever!:thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown

yeah the afx ecu raises the redline, but only to 8200, i want more. say 9 - 9500 should be good. and no you don't NEED a higher redline. but when you start to go up in turbo's you do NEED a higher redline to take advantage of the power.

The AFX ECU isn't going to be a good idea with a turbo system since it makes most of its power by advancing the timing. Can you say ping?

And you only need the super high redline if you're running a full drag car with a snail the size of a basketball. If you need to rev to 9KRPM to achieve full boost, guess what? Your car is no longer streetable imo. Welcome to a little place I would call Lag City.

Bigger is not always better. Ideally, you want a compressor that makes peak boost early on in the RPMs and can hold that a longer time. For a street car, you want as much boost as soon as possible right? Right.

The AEM EMS will require you to input (correct me if I'm wrong somebody) the AF ratio at every throttle position, relative to RPM and speed. You need a baseline set-up just to get the car to idle. After that, you'll have to modify the fuel curve for any given RPM and set your timing as well. It just seems like a nightmare for the amount of power you can get out of it. I say, the average Joe with no dyno priviledges should be lucky to A) get it to run at all and B) get it to put out as much HP as it was stock.

If you've got the patience and the pockets for it. DO IT! There are many others out there like yourself who are only waiting for someone to make that thing work. You just have to ask yoursefl, "is it really worth it?"

Good luck!

lol, i know what you mean. and i was talking about 9k rpms for the 25g, that would let me take full advantage of the power not just spool it up, it does have some lag but also has a good power curve on it. and i believe the a/f input on the ems is for every 500rpms or something like that. i'm still not sure what i'm going to do. i've got plenty of time, unfortunately, to think about it. my lawyer said it would most likely be about 4 more months before the insurance company made an offer. so...we'll see.

with proper tuning on the dyno you can decrease the lag with a stand alone!:cheers

I am very interested in the AEM EMS and plan to buy it. It is very time consuming and is diffucult to tune but can be very usefull and if tuned right will create a lot more HP. The aem program can be downloaded from www.aempower.com and there are baselines for different cars but not ours. There are a lot of things you can do with it including creating dyno's.
