Well my car idles at 2300rpm. I can't find any vaccum leaks, replaced vaccum lines anyway. Replaced the iac motor, still no change. Cleaned out the throttle body really good, new gasket, etc., no change. I can't hear any leaks around the intake gasket, sprayed throttle body cleaner around, it doesn't make a difference. I've replaced the ecu, no change. Everything I can think of and it still idles at 2300rpm. Anybody have an idea I haven't tried already?:-(

TPS- Throttle postioning sensor... Other then that... I would defintly say a vac leak. 2300 RPM, its not going to be a big leak, somthing small. Just keep looking.

Well I just put it back together after replacing the throttle body gasket, and now I'm thinking it might be the tps. Now it stutters like a mofo trying to drive down the road. And my speedo quit working? I'm going nuts here.

Sounds like you have an electrical problem to me. Maybe even a bad ECU.

If you rev the engine then take your foot off the gas quickly and your rpm's fall back down--jump up--and then fall down (without any pressure on the gas pedal), that is a good way to know if your TPS is not workin.
But your idle shouldn't be so high. Even from that.

It happened to me.

Make sure your TB is closing all the way (i'm sure it is if you took it off).

I saw in another post, that you took off a vac line at the EGR and then it idled normal? What exactly did you do there. Be specific if you can.

Ok, I put a new tps on there. The stuttering problem quit. My speedometer still isn't working. It was working fine before I took off the throttle body to clean it out, so I'm stumped on that one. When I took the vaccum line off of the egr vaccum control thing, whatever you wanna call it, and put it directly on the egr yeah the idle went down to normal but it was running really rich considering all the exhaust being burned, and of course you couldn't leave it there cuz if you hit the gas it would go dead. Current status, Idle goes up and down exactly like sonny said, if it does stay still its at 2300rpm. And my speedometer is dead, all the other gauges are fine. I kind of doubt its the ecu since I've replaced it just recently and it idled high as hell with the old one, I have no clue on the speedo. I'm about ready to blow this car up and get another one on my insurance :-( .

im in the same situation, my speedo dont work, car keeps stalling out randomly, even after hte computer "relearned" its been about a week of constant stalling out

Were you having the idle problem before, or after you took off the TB and cleaned it? Could be coincidence that your VSS went bad i suppose..Check the connector on the trans to the VSS. Be sure its ok and plugged in, not corroded, ect..

Edit, ok so this happened after you took off the TB. How did you clean the TB, what did you do? Take off any sensors? What type of cleaner? Also, be SURE your throttle plate is closing fully. A small gap will make it idle high. Be sure you dont have too much tension on your throttle linkage and is keeping it open

The car has idled like this ever since I first got it, since like march I guess. Anyway, swapped ecu, put a short ram intake on, replaced almost all the vaccum lines, can't find a leak anywhere, replaced the iac motor, now the tps, no change. I took the TB off, took off the iac and tps, cleaned it with tb cleaner real good, let it dry off, wipped it down, checked it out real good, the butterfly is where it should be, I checked the throttle cable, made sure it didn't have too much tension or slack, new gasket of course, put it all back together. Same problem plus the vss thing. Can you think of anything I didn't, I might have left something out.

What happens if you unplug the IAC when its idleing? Could be a leak in either the intake where the 2 plenums meet, or even the gasket on the cylinder head. No telling what someone may have done to it before you?

Our throttle bodies have an idle set screw that is adjusted at the factory and then capped off with an aluminum cap. Check to see if the cap for the idle set screw is still in place. If the cap is missing and you can actually see the screw head, then chances are that the previous owner messed with it. You should readjust it. If the cap is still in place then I wouldn't suspect the idle set screw.

The only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is that you may want to replace the intake manifold gaskets - the one to the head and the one between the upper and lower manifold peices.

Ok vss problem fixed, somehow the connector came unplugged, no clue on that one, I'm baffled. Anyway if you unplug the iac it doesn't change any. The only way to get the idle down is turn on the a/c, its always been like that. So I got a new tps, new vaccum lines all over, new iac motor, disassembled the electronic part of the egv, everything seemed fine there, cleaned the tb, new gasket for the tb, checked the throttle cable, the butterfly in the tb, new ecu, gutted my cat a while back, new coil pack, new plugs, the timing belt was changed before I bought the car, the timing marks line up, and I got the short ram intake on there. Anyway ever since I've owned the car its been like this, and still is like this with everything I've done to it. I doubt its the ignition but I think I'll replace the plug wires just in case since everything else is new. And when you have the a/c on and the car is idling around normal (1k rpm or so) it sounds like its missing, or maybe camming, I'm not sure, but the car never misses any other time. Also after I got everything working again the car seems like its performing a little better, but then again that could be cause its a cold night. Well that is pretty much all the info I can give you on the problem so maybe you can figure something out. Oh yeah I can't hear any leaks around the intake gasket, plus I've sprayed throttle body cleaner around it and no change in idle which would suggest its not leaking. Let me know if you can think of anything else. thanks alot.

Yeah the cap was there, I took it out to check and see if that was the problem, didn't help any.

I can't remember if your PCV valve has been mentioned.


Is your PCV valve hooked up? has it been re-routed or altered in any way? check it, does the valve itself only flow one way?

Yeah I forgot to mention it, I replaced it with a new one, everything looks fine there. Are there any really hard to find vaccum lines I might not know about? Like something that goes to the charcol canister or something?

Ok I'm almost positive its the intake gasket next to the head. Just how difficult is it to change? How long will it take? Will I need any special tools? Is there a certain way you can do it and save some time? Also I'm pretty sure I'll have to disconnect the fuel rail, is there a special way to do that? I'm certain I can do this considering my knowledge of the matter but I figured a few answers to some questions will keep me from having some unexpected suprises durring the proccess. Thanks for the info.

i had this problem long ago when i was nt, my car would idle very high, and the problem was the EGR valve. i dunno if this might be your prob though.

Well that answers one of my questions. I was wondering if the EGR would do that. But I believe its the intake gasket. You can spray it with some throttle body cleaner and it affects the idle a little bit. It just seems like too small of a leak to cuz it to idle at 2300rpm.

DId you get it fixed? I had the same problem, it was the intake gasket. I had a stripped spark plug hole, so I pulled the head. ITs a bitch to pull the intake, and there are two bolts near the fire wall that go to some plastic box that has a lot of vacume line going to it.

Go buy a cheap vacuum gauge. Check your intake "trees" (there are two ports back there) and make sure you are getting about 15-20 in/hg. The high idle might affect this so use good descretion. The guage will say for SURE if you have a vacuum leak at any source. It's time consuming.

Well I haven't had time to fix it. I think I'm gonna do it within the next few days. Once again my p/s belt ripped to shreads. This is the 4th time in 8 months. It doesn't matter if I buy the cheapest or the most expensive belt it always happens. But it is the intake gasket. If you spray it down with throttle body cleaner the car idles higher. I'll fix it when I get a chance. I just gotta worry about getting to work now :( .
