60235, What the hell is causing this smell?? Posted by FlyinEsi, Sep-26-03 12:29 PM
My car has done it for a while, but I just remembered when it got cold last night. I turn on my heater when the car is cold, and when it starts heating up inside the car, it smells like anti-freeze coming out of the vents . . . any ideas??

I would say your heater core may have a leak..

Yeah, it sounds like the heater core. Do your windows fog up when you have the heat on?

HG=headgasket, but it's probably your heater core. Check for any moisture or coolent smell around the passenger side footwell and under the dash on the passenger side.

also check your radioator. It happened to me almost a year ago, my radiator had a small leak and everytime I turned on the heater it smelled like antifreeze. I'd definetly look for a leak inside your engine bay for antifreeze.

Doesn't antifreeze slowly burn off naturally? Hence the reason you need to add more over time? Just wondering...

I know some of the water in the 50/50 mixture evaporates, but you sholdn't be able to smell coolant. I'd say definately the heater core.

I do have a small, very small leak from my headgasket, but I've had that since I bought it, or at least shortly after }(. I will have to check out the bay for any radiator leaks or anything else that looks suspicious...
Thanks for the help guys
