60168, Should i Really go higher then the crane #10's Posted by darosa4561, Sep-25-03 12:43 PM
Everyone says that you should go higher then #10's but i dont know. I need a nice idle very smooth. my car is a everyday driver. i dont want a crapy lumpy idle. and on the crank website they say numbers tens are the best. Also im getting the AF/X ECU and they say to use #10's for best results. I will be reving very high what do you guys think i should do

I would say at least go with 12's. Idle should be fine and you get better lift out of the cams.

Smooth idle? We don't need no stinking smooth idle.

I didn't even consider looking at the #10s... it came down to cranes and crowers being the same amount in price, $400 for #12s from howell, $400 for crower stage2s from summit racing. howell had a better deal on the gears and underdrive pulley. and, yes, I do expect (or I'll adjust) for a lumpy idle.

I have crane 16s my car idle has a slight lope and i do mean slight. But my car idles high because of 60mm jeep TB so that takes away alot of the lope.

I plan on building my head and bottom end around the same time and Im gonna go with 16s. If you look at the neon guys, when they build up their heads they go with radical cams like crane #22s on their street cars. They have a couple of video's of the car idling with them and while its not like stock its still seems tolerable.

yea like ^^ said 16's are made for the NA cars, if you plan on staying NA then 16's are for you. I thought the same thing but really my car is lumpy at idle anyway so what's the big deal. i can understand if it lumps up and down about 500 rpm though but 2-300 is tollerable to me.

Who says that? According to howell, they recommend crane 16 cams for best results..which are similar to Crower 2 cams..See sig:thumbsup

If you cant handle a little bit of lump which is to most people cool factor.. then why are you buying cams ?
the lumpyness is like what old v8's had most people love that lopey cam feeling and sound..
ona 420a its never gonna be like that due to a inline motor but cmon its not like your car will die it just idles differently...

Bill is right. The coolest idling 4 cylinders are those WRC rally cars. I wish we had something like that for the 420a

I def am going for all motor. The thing is it wont be that hard. If you have a hard job ahead of you. No one has seriously tried a all motor 420A Avenger. i think the quickest if like mid 15's to low 15's pffffff. thats nothing. Hit me up on Aim, we can go over plans and shit my AIM Name is RaiderX7

I have the crane #10s. They are nice, better than stock, don't get me wrong, but I'm starting to wish I didn't take it so easy and went with the #12s.
I don't know if the #16s would be for me, as I like having my car idle normally :) but it seems the #12 woould not be a problem with idle, but everyone with #16s or Crower stage 2 cams has lumpy idles. Hey, if you're ok with that, that's fine :) I'm not saying that's a bad thing, it just might not be for everyone.

Does anyone have a sound clip of the #16s in action? Hell, does anyone on here actually run them? I know Steve's got the Crowers clip in his sig, but I'm looking to go all motor here too. (If only I still had that job...)
I've got the bottom end for it, but I think it'll be awhile before I can swing another couple grand under the hood. I'm still lost on the cams though. I know there's that huge thread in advanced tuning, but after about 60 posts, they all look the same to me. :shrug
I'm definitely getting the ECU and some adjustable gears, but I'm probably going to stay budget tuner and get the PT Cruiser valve train components. I have the clutch as it is, may not go all the way, huh?
Either way, I'm not doing anything more until I get some fuel managment installed. Got plans for a wideband AF and some pressure regulation in the near future. }(
I'm doc16sixty5 on AIM if you guys want to talk about scaring the turbo boys. ;)
