60073, oil leak.... Posted by majicalevil, Sep-24-03 09:07 AM
Quick question, if you have very low oil and your oil light doesnt come on, and when you stop your engine is kinda smoking, visible smoke but not full puffs coming from your engine how bad is that? I kinda smelt something getting hot and i thought it was the low coolant so i checked and it was fine and so was my oil. I came home after 25 minutes of driving to school and back and notice there is a suniffigant amount of oil laying on the ground. MY oil light never came on and my temp said it was normal. It runs still but im going to take the valve cover off to make sure all my cams are ok, do you think the piston rings would be fine, or should i try to get them fixed? NEed help pretty bad

well if theres oil on the ground thats not good.... if you were burning oil then i would suspect the piston rings, but if it just lost it its comming out of somewhere.... check these couple things.... oil pan gasket/ bolt (i once lost my drainage plug on my 1g....kinda sucked)...then check behind the block, you'll see a couple sensors, one of them is your oil pressure sensor, visually see if the oil is comming out of there.... next, still behind the block, check your headgasket...they sometimes leak oil out the back....finally i would check the valve cover..doubtfully but could be that.... hope that helps, it was kindof hard to understand what exactly happend

Well i knew it was the valve cover once i saw the oil on the ground because i recently changed it. But i thought i lost alot of oil, well there is still some oil on the dip stick probley 4-5mm below the low line, and now it is knocking/ticking some, could just need oil right now, but im going to look further into it tonight. I just hope it didnt mess anything up, the cams look fine, but the rockers could have gotten messed up, i pray that they didnt.

knocking or ticking? don't drive the car now... sounds like you spun a rod bearing.... just get some Clevite 77's from napa and drop the pan and change them bearings
once you go low on oil is when you spin bearings. don't worry, they only cost like $40 (over estimate) +tax. i'd reccomend new rod bolts too

well i dropped some oil in and its doing better, now its just mainly the tick in the rockers (normal dsm stuff) im not worryed about it now. Ill probley get a new bottom end this summer so im not going to worry about it. Im thinking VT all the way.
