Yo, check me out...

I took my car to the shop on TUESDAY because it has been dripping oil for the past 4 months and I have been procrastinating fixing the car, but have finally taken it in...

I was told that I have a Cam seal leak and a front main seal leak. I was quoted $340 to fix the problem. I also need a new timing belt because it's soaked in oil (i already replaced my timing belt a few thousand mines ago)

Anyway, the tech broke a gear (a gear near the pasenger side's fender) and I have to pay for it because they say it was cracked when they started working on it and broke when they pulled it.

Oh well no biggie, my friend is the service manager and is getting me the gear brand new from mitsu for $17.00, but I'll have to wait until THURSDAY for the gear to showup.

Thursday rolls up, and theyare working on my car and my friend is like "Want me to ring your bill up?" and i replied with "Um, why don't we wait and see what else you guys are gonna brake before we bill me!" Just being a jackass.

Well, sure enough, they broke my timing belt tensioner, which is a $400 part brand new from mitsubishi. They have told me that the part broke because of their own fault and they will pay for it. Suhweet.

FRIDAY (today)
They've contacted all of the local junkyards and i contacted msrecycling.com and nobody has a timing belt tensioner, they even checked in Neon engines too.

Now im wondering what the hell they are waiting for, obviously they dont wanna have to buy the part brand new from mitsu for $400, but looks like all other options have ran out for them and They said i'm not going to have my car till tuesday at the earliest.

You tell them to put that new part in regardless of price since they broke it! I wouldnt let those F###ers put a used part in my car if they are responsible for breaking it! Plus, they are wasting time when you could have had your car by NOW. Yell at them, smack em around and tell them whats up or your going to report their asses to the main offices for Mitsu. Then you will prolly see some grease monkeys running round real-quick like, imo. Asses. Sucks man, hope it works out.

Wow. i don't know why, but i just got an incredible sense of deja vu .. seriously. Scary..

Anyway, there's no F%CKING way a timing belt tensioner is $400. Wanna know why? Because you replace it every time you do the timing belt. period. That's part of the timing belt maintenance procedure. Don't let them bullshit you. it's also not something you want used, again, because it is supposed to be replaced every 60K with your timing belt. If the tensioner fails, it's just as bad as the belt breaking.

The front seal is actually a small rubber o ring that sits in the oil pump. You can get a whole new oil pump from howell automotive for about a hundred bucks. If the front seal went, i'd advize you to replace the oil pump, too. The labor involved, if they've already torn into it that far, is negligable. A front seal by itself is only about $4. That's the dealer price, too. That's where i bought most of the odds and ends for my rebuild.

The pulley they cracked and broke can't be more that $20 anyway, but make sure it comes with the key that holds it onto the crank. It won't do you much good if the new one isn't there or they lost the old one.

If you got oil on your timing belt, replace it. Oil will destroy it quicker than just about anything else that you could get on it.

Your friends the service manager and he's gonna let them charge you $400 for a tensioner (everything they are doing cost $400 total, parts and labor here incl the cam seals minus the front main seal at Hall Mitsubishi). Some friend. I wouldn't pay for ANYTHING they broke even if it is only $17. If it came in working it should leave the same way. Changing the cam seals is a good idea when changing the timing belt cause they do leak over time (and barely add any cost to the job), I dont know about a front main seal (where is this, behind the pulley?). I'd call Mitsu and complain (it always works with chrysler) and then ask my friend how much worse does he allow people who arent friends to get screwwed.

The gear broke and it's costing me $17.00 because it was cracked when they were working on it.

They said that the tensioner broke because they are goofballs and that was the "$400" brand new part that I mentioned.

I remember it being pretty damn expensive when I was doing my timing belt replacement the first time ... and I don't even think I had it replaced because the one of the first places that quoted me for the timing belt replacement said "For a part this expensive, I don't think that it would need to be replaced every 60k miles, thats just rediculous."


The new tensioner on my car (if it arrives monday) is off a car at mitsubishigraveyard.com which had 30k miles on it. I wish it had zero miles on it though, but I can't really bitch because I'm helping a friend that runs a shop and I really would like my car back on MONDAY

All of these things are why you learn to do things like this yourself.

Everytime I took a car to a place to get it fixed, they f@$%ed something else up. Half the time they dont even tell you, or even worse, they say it was all ready broken.

Save some money, buy a chiltons and some tools, and do the stuff yourself.
