how come everyone says to keep the overdrive switch off when racing or launching an auto? doesnt overdrive help in quick acceleration and faster speeds ( according to the eclipse manual). i do notice when on the highway it pulls slightly better with overdrive off. can anyone inform me about this??

overdrive is just a fourth gear... it wont help at all when doing a short race, you'll never make it to fourth gear.... when the car goes into overdrive it drops RMP's to save gas mileage on the highway, etc.... in conclusion, having overdrive off will help if youre doing a rolling start, the car will have to shift less to get to higher rpms..... have you ever driven, or been in a stick....if you want to go faster, you downshift....if your in overdrive, it will take more time to shift into 3rd and possibly into 2nd.....if youre already in 3rd you dont have to shift at all, just floor it....i hope this helps...im shitty at explaining these things

I think you are confused...
Overdrive = 4th gear.
Overdrive OFF means that you will not go into that gear, and I think the shift points change slightly with OD off.
People tend to associate "overdrive" with some Mad Maxx connotation, it isnt so.
search the ATX tranny section for better answers and discussions.
