I decided to get the FTY RiceKiller 2.0 Liter 420A. I was just wondering, since I'm not turbo or N20(anymore), if it would be better in performance than just a cheap stock rebuild. Because a local shop would charge almost half the price for a stock rebuild. Basically I'm asking which engine would be faster, Stock or FTY RiceKiller 2.0 Liter 420A?

It depends on what your goals are. Are you going to up the compression? Do you have any head work done? Are you going to be running stock or aftermarket cams? If you are just going with stock compression I don't see what the benifits of having such a strong engine would be.

If you use 9.6:1 compression pistons in both, you really wont see a change in power output. With the ricekiller, you can order any compression pistons you want though, so if you go with a compression higher than 9.6:1, it will be quicker.

I just need a good daily driver. I plan on using the stock top end. Maybe a valve job with new lifters and rockers. So what compression would you guys reccomend?

I would recommend 10.5:1 with a stock head and pump gas.

Will I have to get new cam gears if I decide to get new cams like the crane 12s? I just want to go as cheap, but good as possible. Maybe the crane 10s would do better on a stock head and engine?

No, the crane cams will work with stock cam gears. If you have your head milled much though you will need adjustable gears. I would recommend having them just to fine tune your cam timing, but if you are under a tight budget, they are not absolutely necessary. You can go with the crane 10's if you want, but the #12 cams are very streetable.

OK, heres what I'm going to do Matt. Send off an extra engine I have to Faster Than You, and get the Rice Killer 2.0 with 10.5:1 compression pistons so I can use the stock head and pump gas. As for the head I am going to give it to a local head shop (only charging me $300) to do a valve job, put in new rockers and lifters, and check for warpage. I only have $2000 to spend, so I want to get my moneys worth. Does this sound good? Or could I get a better deal somehow. Also, does the 10.5:1 compression pistons come free of charge with the rice killer or do I have to pay more than the $1645 advertised price? By the way thanks for you help Matt.

That's really an impossible question to answer with any specifics. Every motor is different and every driver is different. I dont want to tell you that you will run 15's because you may not be an experienced drag racer and/or you may not have the engine tuned to its fullest potential. Is it possible that you could make a 15 sec pass? Sure it is. Is it possible that you make a 16.5 sec pass? Yup. There are too many factors to consider, but I can say that the motor is certainly capable of doing what you want it to.

The same thing applies for HP and torque. I can't give you any guarentee as to what kind of power your engine will put out because each engine is different. To give you an estimate as to what I think it should make though with just the modifications that you are looking at, I would say somewhere in the neighborhood of 185 crank hp. Here is the logic behind my estimation... We dyno'd a stock 420a at VT in the spring with only a k&n filter at 143 hp. That seems a bit high to me, so I'll use 135 hp as a base in your case. So, the extra point of compression gives you approximately a 4% increase in peak hp which puts you at 140.4. Then add cams which will give you more gains with higher compression than they would with stock pistons. For this estimate, ill just say they give you 20 hp. So now you're at 160.4 whp. Now, I'll estimate that you lose approximately 15% of power in the drivetrain. Since the number i gave you is whp, it has already accounted for that loss so we add 15% of that number to give you crank hp which puts you at 184.46 hp. This number does not account for any other modifications that you already have. I hope this helps.
