5912, head work???
Posted by killhonda666, Oct-31-01 02:40 PM
Hey everyone...winter is coming so i have like six months of down time for my 2gnt (i get to drive my blazingly fast 1991 eclipse 1.8l sohc 92 horsepower monster in the snow) Anyway im taking the head off and doing cams, cam gears, pulley, valve springs and copper head gasket...any thing else i should do while everything is apart?? i also plan to run naws... so how could i raise compression??

Thicker head gasket or better would help. Get some porting done work for cheap while its off.

I'm asuming you are not going turbo? because of you are do not raise compression.

With that said. A thinner head gasket and milling material off the head will raise compression. About .030"-.040" for 1 compression point raise. Do a search back and you will find a post by Fast420A, with exact guyidelines on what to mill for what compression ratio. 10.5:1 is a decent copression ratio. I am planning on 11.5:1+

Here are some static compression numbers on a stock gasket(.040"):

.068" mill= 11.5
.053" mill= 11:1
.039" mill= 10.6

These numbers work in 2 two ways. Milling/gasket thickness is one in the same. It's all about taking volume
away from the cumbustion chamber. Our engine, stock, has a combustion chamber of about 51cc. If you
reduce that then compression is raised. So you can take from the stock gasket's .040 down to .022(thinnest
I've been able to find) and that is .018 from the gasket and .018 less to be milled from the head. Less to
be milled is what we are looking for. So go thin as possible on the Gasket.
For example, on a .022" gasket, only .050" needs to be milled from the head instead of .068" on a .040"
gasket to achieve an 11.5:1CR

Well I'm not Michael the new moderator, ;-) but I'll tell you my plan. I am going to use the howell rebuild kit to take care of the bottom end.
http://howell.mountain.net/Talon/DSMEngineKits.html

The kit has JE 12:1 compression forged pistons, Eagle Forged Rods, Clevite 77 Main and Rod bearings, Total Seal piston rings, Mopar gasket set, and a Melling Oil pump. You can also get the kit with a 10.5:1 compression (Streetable Nos) and 8.6:1 (Turbo).

To accomidate the high compression, I plan on using atleast 330cc injectors maybe even 440's, accel external fuel pump, walbro internal fuel pump, and S-AFC. I know that this is TOTAL overkill but I don't want ANY problems with detonation and I am going to use NOS at the track on that high compression.

I am not going to mill the head at all. Stock MLS gasket. I am going to get billet cams when they finally come out. I am using regrinds for the time being. I am getting a stock head from Strauss for full port and polish and 5 angle valve job. Stainless Steel 1mm oversized valves which increases compression 0.4:1, PT Rockers and lifters, Crane or Rage Valve Springs with Titanium retainers (Rage springs are double springs from www.cnnpracing.com)

could you run 10.5:1 compression on stock internals??

i don't think you can run as much naws with higher compression.

I got this from the NOS website.

Detonation is the result of too little fuel present during combustion (lean) or too low of an octane of fuel. Too much ignition advance also causes detonation. In general, most of our kits engineered for stock type engines will work with premium type fuels and minimal decreases of ignition timing. In racing application where higher compression ratios are used, resulting in higher cylinder pressures, a higher fuel octane must be used as well as more ignition retard.

You can do it, just not too high of a shot on the street. I plan on running between a 12:1 and a 12.4:1 compression on the street and then using a 50 to 100 shot on race gas at the track.

so do you think a 50 shot would be safe with 10.5:1 compression???
5924, RE: head work???
Posted by Michael_97RS, Nov-02-01 05:01 AM
At first I'm planning on milling the head .050" and running a .020"-.022" gasket. Getting a set of washers from ARP to push the head bolts up so everything seals correctly without bottoming any bolts out. Running about 11.5:1 compression possibly using undercut valves to raise the compresison another .4-.5 CR. A set of cams, stronger valvetrain, etc.

Eventually do a bottom end rebuild with 10.5:1 pistons and a thicker head gasket, run in the range of 12.5:1+ once I set fuel and everything else at 11.5:1 to see what my need would be at the higher compresion. Most likely switch to 330cc inj. If i can get a quad TB set up to work maybe bigger, but a lot easier to control with an independant fuel computer.

10.5:1 compression isn't a problem on stock internals. If you want a 50 shot just make sure you are deliveringa enough fuel or you'll melt the stock internals... of course without enough fuel you could melt any internals.

Sounds like everything u said about detination is correct.. atleast to what i understand about it. As i understand u can get up to 14.0:1 compression on 93 Octane fuel before u hit detinatation. I heard some guys talkin the other day about building a bullet proof engine .. running something crazy like.. 12:1 compression w/20 psi of boost, the guy only ran the car twice.. but i can't believe that he isn't detinating.. (he's using 93 octane) His compression with the boost should be something like 17:1.. thatz sick.

Two questions for u all..
1- Does compression vary w/rpm? if so.. how?
2- Does NOS effect compression?

97' Eclipse RS (kinda)
HRC stage III turbo kit (12-18 psi)
HKS 2 1/2" cat back exhaust
16" wheels w/Yokohomo tires (215/45)
420A engine w/ billet crower rods, and 8.5:1 JE pistons
Power-stop brakes w/axis pads
Ebachi Pro lowering kit (1.8")

Yeah, i take vettes, i love these DSM's

>Two questions for u all..

>1- Does compression vary w/rpm?

Nope. The compression is measured by the amount the air that is compressed from when the piston is down all the way and the valves are closed until the piston is up all the way with the valves closed. 9.6 parts of air/fuel mixture compressed to the volume of 1 part is our stock compression.

>2- Does NOS effect compression?

Nitrous is pretty much air in a different form. It is compressed with the rest of the air.

Compression is a physical cylinder size change. The size of 1 cylinder in our car is 499cc, compress it 9.6 times and you have about 52cc of space. Boost plus higher compression usually don't mix. Nitrous and higher compression require more fuel and ignition retardation.

Stan's compression is only 10.6:1. Thats only 1 point. 11.5 is getting to be high compression and 13.0 is pretty much race only. I think I am going to be pushing it with 12.4:1.
