58964, Cat resistor mod didn't work????
Posted by NCHRGE, Sep-10-03 08:42 PM
i wired in the resistor in to the black wire and my CEL came back on again tonight. did i do it wrong or is there something else wrong with my car? I also unhooked the battery while i did this so no short could have happened. PLEASE help a brother out!!!!!

mine worked. what resistor did you use?

mine worked, got a cel 1 time after that, rest the cu never happened again

i used radio shack 271-1356 1/4 ohm or whatever im going to reset thr ecu and hope that helps. thanks for the replys peeps. anyone else feel free.

It's not a fool proof method, but it should greatly reduce the occurances of the CEL.

Probably something else that's wrong.

I dont think the 1 Meg Ohm resistor is the best choice to fool the ECU. I am trying to find the best resistor value to lower the signal amplitude and still let the ecu see the O2 sensor oscillate. When I have some time I will find the input impedence on the ECU for the rear O2 sensor and run a simulation in SPICE to get the perfect signal. I will let you know when I complete this because I cannot get rid of the rear O2 CEL with the 1 Meg Ohm resistor.

could be a blown rear o2, even with a resistor, a broken sensor will always throw a code

The sensor is fine, I can watch it with my datalogger. When I remove any kind of resistor or circuit that I made, the O2 output is normal. I know what the signal should look like on a normal car with a cat and I am trying to replicate that as close as possible. The error I get is O2 output stays at center, which means that the signal is not oscillating enough. I think 1 Meg Ohm is too much. I will figure it out sooner or later.

i put a test pipe in today and just wondering, does your guys's sound like raspy shit? mine sounds like a fucking coffee can

the cat acts as a muffler in s sense that it restricts the flow which in turn wuiets down engine noise. a testpipe will make ur car sound like....shit. thats why i made my testpipe out of a race only resonator. 2.5in 2.5out. i get the power gains without as much noise. no rasp whatsoever. just a mean growl.

I'm assuming this is my test pipe i made? How did the install go? Everythig fit up nice? Just wondering, i like to get feed back on these things :) Yeah, since i am turbo, taking out my cat had very little effect on my exhaust note. I had run a gutted cat for a long time, and switching out to a test pipe only changes the tone very, very little. I do have a 2.5" resonator behing the test pipe, and I run a Borla SS oval muffler. Round, straight through mufflers tend to be raspy, esp without a cat or resonator. Do you have a resonator behind the test pipe? Whenever you get rid of the cat, concentrating on the rear exhaust section and whats in it, becomes more important for exhaust tone..

yeah dude the test pipe was BEAUTIFULLY made seriously amazing work, your kits are badass. It's awesome except well...the shitty ass sound lol. I guess being n/a is the problem lol. Ohwell, and yeah i have a resonator but it's a ghetto ass one. Oh well man its all good, your work is awesome and over the top, i left you feedback, please do the same.

My CEL came back on 2 weeks after I did the cat resistor too. Dammit!!!!

if i reset my ECU will it still show up on the ODB2 code test they run in Texas?. sorry if it doesn't make sense kinda baked!

No as long as the ECu has had a cance to run a full diagnostic cycle you will be fine, street and highway conditions an dthe ECU is happy. just needs different load specs to run diagnostic. You can clear the codes drive around a day or so and without CEL hit emissions.

I just put that test pipe on my car yesterday. i put the resistor in line but I got a CEL today when I was driving around. Any ideas beyond resetting the ECU? Casue I thought the resistor was supposed to stop this.

Also, I got a battery light today. COuld the resistor be messing with crap there? Or maybe the ground strap going to the cat that I didn't hook up anywhere?

Yeah, to get rid of my raspiness i'm going to get one of the Extreme PSI exhaust because they have two resonators in line. Peace

Man, thats odd that the resistor isnt working. I have had a gutted cat for well over 1.5 years, and usign that resistor, I have never had a CEL for the cat..wierd.. You guys are solering your connections right? Any other type of crimped or other connection may increase resistance, which may cause problems. Mine is soldered. I'm wondering if the 95-96 model years need a different resistance? I have a 98 BTW. What years are your guy's cars again? Maybe thats something to look into, since the 95-96 ECU's are different..

I have a 95. I went without the CEL for a couple of weeks after I soldered in the resistor. When it came on, I cleared it with my laptop but then it came back on a couple of days later. Since then, it has gone off by itself and then came back on a day or so later and has been on ever since.

NCHRGE - What muffler is that on your car? I've been looking for that particular style for a while... where'd it come from? Thanks!

The best way to fix any CEL is to take out the bulb behind the speedo/tach assembly.
