58841, Timing Belt -> Problems Galore Posted by an0maly321, Sep-03-03 05:33 PM
Hey guys, I have had some serious bad luck with my DSM, I went to get some preventive maintainance done on my car, got the timing belt changed, then a week later driving down the freeway doing 70, the car completely dies. I had to do some fast maneuvering and reserve the cars momentum to make it to the side line. Anyway basically the belt had come off and my engine was screwed. I took it to the shop they told me the tension pully broke, he showed me the part as well. This is where all the rest of the crap started, I find out because it broke at such a high rpm , the pistons collided with the intake valves and the exhaust values in one cylinder causing them to get bent, plus the hydraulic liftors to get messed up. Now when i get my car back, it runs like its on drugs, leaking oil and the engine light with code 21, 31. I have to take my car back again, I just cant believe my car got so jacked up.
Anyway I wanted to know if anyone else had this experience with the tension pully breaking. My mechanic tells me that this is a problem with Mitsu's but i have never heard of it. I am starting to think he just made a mistake somewhere but is trying to blame it on the part

What are the odds that your tensioner pulley decided to break immediately after your mechanic tampered with it? I'd say that he had something to do with it. It really sounds to me like you need to kick that shop in the nuts and do business elsewhere. I'd try to get some money back if I were you.

tensioner pulleys on our car suck. ALWAYS get them changed when doing a timing belt if the car has high miles. about all that stuff being damaged, thats what happens when timing belts snap on dsms. i did my change myself, but if i didnt know how i definitely would have taken it to the dealer and just dealt with the empty wallet.

That guy messed up. And its funny how he said that happens on mitsu motors, because its a dodge motor. I have had a lot of problems with mechanics and timing issues. One guy did my timing belt on my 1g and destroyed the motor. Then he tried to blame it on me. After a couple months and my father getting involved they replaced the motor. Don't let these mechanics fuck you. Lend a car from someone and fight this guy to the end. Thier is no reason that broke other than he did not do it right. I believe it says to replace the tentioner pully and the hydrolic tentioner, so if he didn't he fucked up. don't give in!

doh! i was thinking about the 4g63!

it says to, but it is not part of the timing belt change unless you pay for the extra parts and labor.
hope it all works out for you man.

Funny, my motor wouldn't be all jacked up if my timing belt broke... :D -=B-=

i don't know how a mechanic can even screw up doing a tensioner. it's so simple. you put the belt on and stick the pin in the cylinder. get a torque wrench and tighten up the bolts to spec (something like 25 foot pounds if i remember correctly?). if done right the pin will fall out on it's own. crank the engine twice to make sure the timing marks are still true. you're done with the timing belt.
then again, that along with 12438273984 other things that mechanics somehow screw up makes me glad that i'm the only one who works on my car.
so yeah. definately go after that shop. they screwed up your car. they should pay so you can get it fixed elsewhere, or better yet (if you have the skills and time) fix it yourself.

Hammer on that shop. Go directly to court, the Better Business Bureau, and the Bureau of Automotive Repair if they give you any shit about it.
It's in every 420a manual: You MUST replace the tensioner bracket, pulleys, and tensioner every 60k miles.
The shop is responsible for any work they did. Hold them to it and don't give up. It blows me away how inept some mechanics are... Kaiser got his "built" motor back from a engine shop- assembled with NO GASKETS and NO SEALANTS.

how exactly did your 420a warp from interferance to non-interferance? the 2.4 or whichever swap you did gave it enough clearance? hmmmm, might be something worth looking into just for that reason.

No, it's cuz Bill's motor isn't running, so if his timing belt breaks ain't shit gonna happen LOL :)
