I know thier is a crank seal on the flexplate side, but is thier one on the timing side? I know the oil pump goes over that side, does that seal it up? Just wondering..

I just had my crank seal replaced while they replaced my timeing belt...so I would assume there is one on that side.

yeah i know thier is one over there. I just want to be sure i didn't miss anything on the other side. I just went to satan to get the front main seal and an o ring for the coolant feed tube.

does this front main seal push in just like the cam seals? should I grease the inside to keep it from catching on anything while i install it?

edit: fark looks like I needed the rear main seal. But it looks like the right size.. weird.

The front main seal goes on the timing belt side (front) of the crank. The rear main seal seals the crank on the clutch side (rear) of the engine.

yeah, i just figured that out. heh. I asked for the front, but what I got looks like the right part. Its about 5 inches wide, and i think the crank on the timing side is much smaller.

Umm, the front main seal is about an 1-1/4" in diameter, it goes in just like the camshaft seals, make sure to lube it with clean engine oil, and be careful taking the old one out, if you nick it and then don't get it polished w/ 400 grit sandpaper it will leak.

they gave me the right part! woo! I put it in last night, put some lube on the inside and made sure the lip sat on the crank correctly as I pushed it on. Then set it back flush with the block, all the way back. Is thier some kind of sealant I am supposed to use? i hope not, because I didn't use any... :wary

So i bolted up the flex plate and clutch. all i need now is a slip in diff and i can put my baby back togeather. im excited!

There's no sealant necessary. Once main seals are pounded in, they stay. There's a tensioner spring inside to make sure its tight.

Whenever I decide to be a cheap bastard and re-use main seals, (for example when I assemble the block and forget to put in the oil pump O-ring) I smear a little grey RTV on the OUTSIDE (none on the inside/crank side).
