58258, I know this happens, but why? (head gasket) Posted by Hamgumball, Aug-31-03 06:19 PM
I know you must put the gasket on the right way, meaning one side is up, and one side is down. But what makes it that it won't seal if it's upside down? Isn't it the same on both sides, if not, why isnt it?
I know Kirby said he used copper gasket spray for a HG with no problems so I dont think the head gasket makes fluid flow just on one side and not the other.
Why I ask is because, I am about 15 mins from completing my head gasket and then this morning I found out that there are tabs that need to be on in a certain order. Oh yea, I'm pissed.

Becasue the HG has holes in it to match oil and coolant passages that run from the block into the head. if you put the gasket on upside down, those holes don't line up, and some of those passages will become connected because of that. It's not the same on both sides because the passages are not the same on the front and back of the motor.

Yeah it's just so all the passages line up. Just pray yours is the right way.
