58210, Does 8.8:1 compression and the 2.2 Stroker cancel each other out?
Posted by xEclipsE RaceRx, Aug-31-03 07:28 AM
Ive been reading up the achives on rebuilding the bottem end, and I have taken interest towards the FTY 2.2 Stroker with 8.8:1 compression and a turbo kit later on down the road. But like i said i found out in the achives that for every 0.1 of displacment there is a 4% increase, so 8% with the 2.2 stroker right, then with every drop in compression from stock 9.6:1 to 8.8:1 there is 4% decrease. So would there only be a 4% gain overall with the compression and stroker? Would it just not be cheaper and the same to just keep the 2.0 and add 10.1:1 pistons (FTYs 2.0 ricekiller)and increase 4% right there? Maybe im just not understanding all the benifits of the stroker kit, also with that 2.2 the rpms would redline at like 6,800K instead of 2.0's 7200? So the turbo wouldnt be pushing as long...right? Can someone please help me clear this up. Ive been searching for like a total of 4 or 5 hours now.

2.2 Stroker with 8.8:1 & turbo
or
2.0 with 10.1:1 & turbo (cheaper, but not good to run boost with high comp. right)

Well I think i just answered some of my questions. I have it wrong. With the 2.2 thats a 10% increase in volume so 10% in power, then with the 8.8:1 comp. bring that 10% down 4% to 6% total increase, right? PLus the stroker kit would add a shit load more torque right? So I think im pretty set on the 8.8:1 comp and the 2.2 Stroker. Thanks for the help guys :thumbsup

BUT one more thing to help clear up (if I am every right about ^^^^ in the first place) The stroker kit still will decrease redline and the turbo wont push as long right...but will that be a big decrease?

you'll move more air w/ more displacement, so turbo will spool quicker and you'll have better low end. Plus w/ lower CR, your margin for error on tuning is much greater.

If the money is not the issue, I'd go w/ the 2.2

Higher CR=greater tuning headaches and lower displacement =slower spooling turbo.

the reason you would want to go 8.8 compression is going to be soley for turbo charging your car. No other reason than that. you will lose some torque, but I the benefit from the turbo will far outway your loss.
Don't go that low of compression unless you are planning to boost.

If you are going all motor choose the 12.5:1 compression, you will have to run good gas, but, believe me... the benifit is noticable.

The 2.2L stroker will run to 7200, at least the howell one will. I believe the 2.4L motors are the ones that don't rev as high. So don't worry about that.

A properly built & balanced assembly, 2.0L, 2.2L or 2.4L with a nice built head will all rev above 7200rpm, i.e. valve springs, lifters & rockers.

The advantage of the displacement is torque, so reving as high usually isn't nbecessary, that depends on the cam set up you are running.

Wow I'd love to see 8k+ redlines one day on purpose instead of accidently misshifts to 8k. :p
