58143, 400 WHP with 7000? How would you do it? Posted by 1FastEclipse, Aug-30-03 05:08 AM
Well guys, can it be done? I'm talking daily driver, not just by slapping a 200 shot on, but either one hell of a all motor setup or turbo. Thanks guys.

you have a lot to read about my friend...fully built motor and at least 15 lbs of boost or more...i dont even know if Bryndn is making 400 and he has the 2.7 stroker with turbo.

Can we verify that armond has only spent $7k in Go-Fast mods? I think I can say that if you aren't going to do your own work it's a NO! Only cause labor, you'd be looking for a stage 4+ about $2,000+ from a shop. But I'm not sure you can put a price on 400hp exactly. Too many options. My opinion. :wary

I now pretty much what needs to be done for 400 hp. I was once turbo and I have been N20 powered so I know the ins and outs of both. I am just wondering if it could be done for 7000. I would of course be doing my own work on the car.

I think you'll need quite a bit more than $7000. Probably about $10,000 and a lot of skill could do it.

not sure what you guys are one but ill be around 400-450 hp with abotu 7k spent on go fast mods, maybe closer to 8 but sitll
turbo kit plus some 3300
almost fully builg engine ( porting head or aftermarket cams but all else done) around 3000ish +/- some, still not sure on total price yet and what im getting
so thats 6300
200 on gauges, 450 for 3" exhaust (or less if i get a custom one done) then somethign to tune with so ;like 200 - 400 or so.
thats around 7200. plsu soem of the things being done to the engine are not neccesary. you dont need any headwork to get 400 whp. so cut out the head work and engine is like 1600 for a built bottom end. so 400 whp with 7k is possible as long as oyu buy the stuff you need.

Built motor, Stage 3 turbo kit, Accel/DFI Gen 7, and a 100 shot direct port.

Since I have yet to see anyone else outside of HRC make over 400whp on a 420A in an avenger/eclipse, I will always point to Armond whenever a question like that is asked. ;) Everything else is just speculation.
You can not put a price on making 400whp anyway as you are going to break stuff and trying to drive a fwd with 400whp on stock clutch and stock diff is useless. You run into a lot of other issues beyond just making power at that point unless you are trying to build a one off dyno queen just to make a claim. I believe a 420A can be built to make 400whp on just turbo for $7k, but you still need the rest of the car to go with it, especially for a daily driver, which is exactly what Armond's Avenger is. My car is closer to what you are looking for anyway. It is not really that complex of a setup. Maybe I can get a dyno in the next few weeks with the TD06-20G on it now.
Oh, and scratch the 7k thing. At that level you need real revs. Move it up to 7800 like we did. :)

MR2=one of the most reliable sport compact cars you can buy. The only thing that ever goes wrong with them is the turbo or the MAS. Other than that they are one of the best racing platforms for the money...mmmmm...mid engine RWD!:thumbsup

Mopar makes a 3.0 V6 (must stick with mopar). I know they put it in the NA 3000gt... But they also put one in I think dodge intrepid. I’m pretty sure it came with duel intake manifolds so this engine would have a lot of potential as twin turbo (VR4). I would use the intrepid one because it’s already set up for FWD... Anyways room in our bay would be tight. But if you could salvage this motor or even pay a little extra and find a Vr4 motor and put that in you would have a beast. It’s not for the average hobbyist... But with right amount of time, and effort you should be able to do this easily under 7000.

58320, RE: 400 WHP with 7000? How would you do it? Posted by The1Bill, Sep-01-03 05:42 PM
ACtually, the 3000GT came with a 6G72, like the twin turbos did. It is, however, a Mitsubishi motor. The engine in the Intrepid is a 3.5L Dodge motor (although some suspect Mitsubishi engineering did most of the work for it). Both of these engines are currently set up transversely (like a FWD), as the NT 3000GTs are FWD, and the AWD 3000GTs use a transfer case with a transversely mounted motor to power the back tyres. Either way, good luck fitting either of these engines into our car... they fit tightly in their original cars. And neither of these use two intake manifolds, there is a common plenum. Wiring it to run would be a real bitch, though. Not to mention mounting it in there. <shudder> -=B-=

Well if your thinking of engine swaps...The avenger with the 2.5L V-6 is going to be equal to the space we have under the hood, so a 2.5L would fit an eclipse. Point being the engine out of the 3000GT VR4 is the same family just its DOHC instead of SOHC like the 2.5L but shouldn't take up much more space. Its possible :wary .

58429, RE: 400 WHP with 7000? How would you do it? Posted by euro_clipse, Sep-02-03 08:58 PM
Well, since we're not actually talking engine swaps, I think it would be wiser and cheaper to get a stage 4 turbo kit. They make one, don't they?? (I remember someone on this board having one) It might not be 400 WHP(not for sure), but wouldn't you have to use an automatic tranny with a V6 swap. I know the V6 Avenger only comes with an auto. So I would try to keep the 420A, and squeeze as much HP out of it as possible. But you might want to take some of that $7000 and find a daily driver, cuz I don't really think your Eclipse would handle it day to day!

Well if you really want 400Whp for 7k or less, go buy a 3rd Gen camaro and build a decent small block and you can have 400Whp in a daily driver :). Personally I got my eclipse for a daily driver and I got a 3rd gen camaro for my hot rod. Although I want my eclipse to go faster too. I'm sure there is a turbo kit in the future for it.

The Avenger actually has slightly more space between the radiator support and the firewall. The radiator support is different. -=B-=

To the guy earlier in the post that said he was "gonna" have 400whp for less than 7k, or just a little more...Dude...i wouldnt talk about what you are "gonna" have until you have it. if you had any clue how hard it is to tune for 400whp, then i doubt you will say that. Anyone and their momma can throw a built engine together and slap a turbo kit on. the REAL power is made in tuning it right. without that, you can run 30psi and you wont make 400whp. not baggin on you or anything, but you make it sound easy or something, and its not. if you have 7k to spend....figure at least 1-2k more than that to pay for shit that breaks, tuning, or stuff you wouldnt even think you need, that you will.

im not saying 400whp is easy. also i said like its closer to 8k. which includes the tuning tool, new clutch. most likely smt -6 but maybe something different. i know its not hard and will take time. but i WILL get there. not saying as soon as i put the new engine in and slap the turbo on. im not expecting t just install everything and have it magically make power. but, i will be able to make it once i tune it. just saying you can do it for around 7k, plus some of the things im getting you dont need to make 400whp. anyway. well find out when i get everything in and get it tuned.

Goodluck man. I hope a standalone is included in your price estimate, cause to run 400whp hp(which will be anywhere from 25-35psi depending on your turbo) RELIABLY, it is almost assuredly a must. and tack on another 500-1k to dyno tune it properly. I know it can be done, and i hope you meet your goals.

Yeah - a standalone($1-$1.5k) would definately help you get there as long as you buld the head(springs, retainers ~$300) to take the revs. Running the motor to 9000RPM would definately help the whp #. You'd definately need a built motor(~$2000). The turbo selection is gonna be crucial. You'll need one that runs efficiently at high boost levels, like the HRC s20g or something like that. That with the rest of the intercooled turbo kit could cost anywhere from $3-$4 k. You'de need bigger injectors(~$200-~$300), and a descent FPR(~$130). So right past the time where you run out of money - you could dyno it. Not sure if the clutch whould hold up too long - but you might be able to get a couple dyno runs on it at least.

Turbo kit coming from Motofool with 38mm tial external gate and the 57 trim t3/t4
built engine coming from Motofool - built bottom end as usual with moly coated pistons and crank. - head wise... :) Titanium retainers/ springs, pt cruise lifters, rockers, only thing head wise right now is no porting and no cams.. yeah i know. i would love to have both and they would help out a great deal but ill just have to deal for now.
also getting the sheetmetal intake mani form motofool and a 65mm mustang tb.
so my engine can handle it and can rev, still figuring out what to use to tune it though. hopefully i should have the money for the engine by the end of this month.
