ive been told by some mechanics (mostly family...) that lightweight flywheels can add some noticable power... does anyone here have one? i've been looking into it for awhile now to go in when i upgrade my clutch.... either fidanza or unorthodox...... any other respectable brands? and is it really noticable just on its own? i know the U.R. flywheel weighs 9 pounds..... anyone know the factory fw weight? and lastly to those who may have one, was it worth the money paid for it? (ive seen like 350-500 for them...) any input appreciated
btw: i didnt know if this should be performance or tranny.... so i put it here :P

If you want to go with a lightened flywheel I would recommend a fidanza one WITHOUT the starter teeth. We have modular clutches (flywheel, clutch disk, pressure plate in one). This all bolts up to the flex plate. You can replace it for a standarnd non-modular clutch assembly but it is a lot of extra work to take off or put on the trans after that. If you get the fidanza flywheel without the starter teeth it allows you to bolt up to the flywheel still and use an aftermarket clutch still. It can be had at howell automotive for about $350.

i didnt notice that much of a difference with my lightweight fw.. i heard somewhere on here its only like a 3 lb difference... which is nice... but i didnt notice it.... and thura.. what seems to be the big deal with using a non modular conversion.. i had no problem popping my tranny in after putting it in

revs up and down WAY quicker, especially downshifts.... rev matching is super easy too. on every shift you can watch your rpm's fall REALLY fast.
lightweight flywheels are the shit imo, definately a great drivetrain mod especially when matched with a sexy clutch setup

Most of use are using spider jacks, pieces of wood and milk crates :)

Oh I love it! And I feel the difference. Of course I am turbo. I can't tell you 100% how good it works or on long term cause I got it in May and my car has been parked since June. But for the few weeks I was about to get on it. WOW! A great mod to do when you are getting a new clutch and if you have $390 laying around, not including labor. And I have a sexy drivetrain. Fidanza lightweight flywheel, SPEC stage 3 modular clutch, Phantom Grip LSD, new bolts, new bushings, etc...Oh Yeah! }(

i thought u loos torque??? does anyone exactly how much torque i lose? and how bout gain in hp? if i loose like 10 lbs. of torque w/ like 30hp gain hopefully more..im in, but if its like 10 hp im not getin one. so if anyone can get me some # on the increase/decrease it would be greatly appreciate.

I don't see why you would loose anything. All it is doing is taking rotational mass off the drivetrain, so it actually doesn't GIVE you any power, just frees up some you already had. I know the RPMs drop faster, which could make it harder to keep the RPMs in the sweet spot, but I think that is about the only disadvantage. I could be wrong though.

you dont loose torque or hp or anything. you don't gain anything either, but if you dyno your car at the wheels there would show a gain because it takes less energy to spin the flywheel and that extra energy gets to your wheels. the reason the RPMs drop so fast is cuz the flywheel doesn't want to keep spinning as much when you don't have the engine accelerating it (when you're out of gear).

why would you get one without starter teeth? how else would you start the car? a rope? push start? (j/k) but seriously, doesn't the starter crank on the flywheel?
how would the engine respond to the lessened rotational inertia brought about by a lighter flywheel? especially for an all motor application where you have a higher compression ratio (i'm asking because i might just go all motor in the future for a while, then slap a turbo on top of that, well, 10.5:1 pistons, with boost, and yes, i know i will be mixing my own gas)

The quicker speed of the reving counters the speed of the deceleration.
The constant advantage is less stress on the engine, and you free up some horsepower that's being lost.
