My car has been acting wierd lately, so I decided to get out the pocketlogger and go driving. For some weird reason whenever I go WOT my timing goes to 5 degrees and slowly works up to about 8. When I am just cruising I get around 30 to 35 degrees. Its so strange cause I can floor it at 2500 rpms and watch the timing drop to 5 and let off the trottle a little and watch the timing climb to 30 real quick.

I did a little searching and saw that people would get as much as 20 degrees advance when under WOT. On my past datalogs I could only reach 18. I also read that somebody reached 40 to 42 degrees advance while cruising. In the history of my datalogs, I have never cruised with more than 30 to 35. I would love to reach that 40 mark - gas mileage heaven for my long road trips.

So what gives..... I need suggestions cause I have tested the wires and the coil according to my chiltons and they are good. The plugs are fresh NGK stock heat range gapped at 0.043. My datalogger picks up the throttle position just fine 12% to 70ish%.

The car is really slow with only 8 degrees timing advance. I can accelerate faster at part throttle than WOT.

Got me.. suspect the knock sensor?

Can I unhook it for awhile to test or is that dangerous? I was getting an EGR CEL code but I unhooked the vacuum line to the EGR solenoid and capped the manifold. I think my solenoid is bad and causing a vacuum leak, but not anymore. I also reset the codes with the pocketlogger, but this is very fustrating.

My wife is telling me to "SELL THE PIECE OF SHIT" jokingly of course. Problem is, she wont let me buy another Mitsubishi.... and I want the EVO.

if the knock sensor is torqued down over 7 ft/lbs, it can do some really wierd things. You may want to try just removing it and tightening it to the proper spec.
