5747, 3" exhaust?
Posted by koolade9, Sep-04-01 08:23 AM
I need a new cat-back, anyway I look at it.

I've been looking at the Thermal research 3" stainless cat-back setup(like the one hahn sells) along with a 3" highflow cat.

The plan is to be turbo by spring, so I'm pretty sure it will be good for that. but till then, will my only adverse affect be the loss of low-end torque? I've already got the 4-1 header...

Yup you said it. It'll hella kill your lowend. NA cars NEED to have backpressure. Dammit my car has too much of it though :(

If you guys go out and get the new issue of SCC (the one with the evo7 on the cover), there's a detailed overview and a "how to build" on custom performance exhaust systems. It explains everything about mufflers, pipe bends, pipe sizing and material, etc. It also clears up some myths about backpressure. Check it out.

No cars "NEED" backpressure.. That's a total myth. Backpressure is BAD, whatever setup you're running.

3" won't totally kill your low end, either. I ran 2.5" NA for almost a year before i went turbo, with a 2.5" high flow and a 2" straight through muffler. i didn't even notice a difference.

If you're going to go turbo, this is the best possible thing you can do exhaust wise. Who cares about NA power when that is in the works?

3" will hurt you low end power but give you some nice top end. Why do you think NA Racecars at the track run open headers! :-)
