I heard using a different weight motor oil such as 10w-40 is better for higher mileage engines (past 100k miles). I'm kinda skeptical since I've never heard of anyone doing this. I currently use 10w-30.

I'm wondering if this is true, if there are any side effects to using 10w-40, and if anyone else is running it? Thanks.

that is true. thicker weight oil are better for older engines, as it aid in compression and sealing.

Doesn't our owner's manuals call for 5w-30 not 10w-30?

our cars probably are recommended to use 5w30, as are most newer vehicles from the factory. however i switched over to 10w30 once i got up into the high miles, its a good idea. it isnt too dramatic of a change. im going to be doing the same for my parents van here soon as well. and i wouldnt consider going more extreme than 10w30 unless you start noticing leaks and such. then it might be an option to consider.

If you have over 100,000 miles use 20W-50 motor oil, like me. Its thicker so it helps slow down leaks and raises your compression. But don't use this stuff in the winter time unless you live in Texas like me.

The only time you might have to wory about the higher weight of the oil (using 10W30 or 20W40 instead of 5w30) is when it is cold out. At startup, you want that 5w rating (which is the rating when the oil is not warmed up) if it's cold (below freezing) for better lubrication when the engine is cold. For the summer it doesn't make a difference.

I used Castrol's High Mileage Oil and it tore my shit up.....I dont recommend a thicker oil in our cars....the engine doesnt like it....if we were driving just a regular sedan and we had there type of gearing and setup I say go for the 10w-40....but not for our cars since we have a sports car which tends to do better with a thinner oil

So, for a car that never sees temps fall much below 60*, you could theoretically stick with the 10w40 or 20w50 all year (maybe go back to the 10w30 in "winter")?

What would be the reccomendation for a freshly rebuilt block with the old 142K head on it? Just curious...

hey, now after that comment ^^^^ im really consideing going from the 10w30 synth blend mobile that ive been using to some 5w30 of the same type of oil. but then i could probably see some leaks from going to a lighter oil now right? im at 106k now i think.

my car is climbing up to 130k and i've used 20w-50 since i bought it, but then i do live in Fl. and the only thing that is cold here are the ppl (not any 2gnters)

20 50 works good IMO i've still got leaks and need a motor rebuild badly but i think i will keep 20 50 or 10 20(which ever is a step thinner from 20 50) when i rebuild Fl is soooo hot ;)
