56739, Building a 420A Stroker Posted by phydiux, Aug-01-03 06:04 AM
Hey guys,
We're going to do a little "bench machining" today :) It's kind of like bench racing, but we're theoretically talking about engines, not how fast a car "should" go :D
Most of this stuff is off the top of my head, so the figures aren't exact, but I just wanted to post about what we're trying to figre out over here because Nick at VT and I have received a lot of questions regarding the availability of a stroker 420A block. We know another vendor sells them, and we're looking into how we would be able to do it. This is what we came up with:
There are quite a few problems presented with using another crank. Two cranks that are similar to the 420A cranks are the 2.4 liter Chrysler crank, and the 2.5 Liter Chrysler crank. The 2.4 crank has a 101mm stroke and the 2.5 crank has a 104mm stroke. Using either of these cranks would totally screw up the rod:stroke ratio of the 420A, and you'd end up with something like a 1.20x rod:stroke ratio. So, unless you're only planning on running the motor to like 4500rpm, you're SOL. There's just too much stroke, no matter what you do with the rod length. Not only that, but you'd have to have custom rods, and custom pistons made. Not too far out of the ordinary, but there's more. The 101 and 104mm cranks have a wider main bearing surface. It's wider by around .060", and the mains are larger in diameter that the 420A cranks. How do you fix the diameter? You'd have to machine the mains down something like .300" (I think this value is larger than this, but I can't remember off the top of my head.) So, let's say we machine the diameter of the crank to fit the 420A diameter, and that's successful. Now, we've still got the problem of the wider bearing surface. How can this be fixed? Well, it could be fixed using a thrust bearing with a thicker shoulder on the thrust face, but those aren't avaiable. How else could it be fixed? It could be fixed by spray welding the crank, and having it machined back down. So, you've fixed that problem.
But it still goes all the way back to whether the crank will fit into the block or not (which we haven't measured) and whether or not you'd run a 1.2x:1 rod:stroke ratio. There's a snowball's chance that we'd ever try to make a 101 or 104 mm crank work in a 420A block. It's not going to happen.
What's another option? We can get custom forged cranks made. No thanks. Do you guys want to spend $4500+ for an assembled motor? I didn't think so :p
The other option? Offset grinding the 420A crank. I'm not confortable selling something like that, though. VT can do that, but I don't think they want to, either. Offset grinding that crank would put some pretty small bearings in it, and it becomes a question of how much you can offset grind the crank. Apparently you can offset grind them enough so that they become 2.2 liters, but you're not going to make up much more displacement than that.
So, we still haven't come to a conclusion on what we're going to do, but I just wanted to let you guys know we're working on it.

What about building up a 2.4L block? I was talking to ARD about building one, but I'm curious as to what you guys could do. It'd just be a 2.4L 420A from a PT Cruiser or whatever, built up the same standard as you guys are doing for the 2.0L. Are you and VT comfortable with a project like that, and what would it cost?

We have no problems doing that, I think FTY already has some pricing on his site.

Alright, cool. When I posted that message, they didn't have anything posted yet. How about some headwork packages for the 420A head? There seem to be plenty for the 4G63, but not one for the 420A...

P.S. - Are you guys strictly an engine shop? Looking to get a tranny rebuild also...

Stock port 420A heads have gone 9's. Headwork isn't completely necessary.

What does howell do to make their 2.2 liter stroker kit work?? The take a reg 2.0 bottem end and turn it into a 2.2 with some crank work.
check and see what they doing, offer same or better reliability, with better customer service, and cheaper price. i would buy it.

They offset grind the crank, use stock length rods, and custom JE's with the wrist pin moved up to keep the piston where it should be in the .040 oversized bore. The Howell 2.2L is actually a small 2.2L - it's about 2150cc, which is ~154cc over stock.

Well I plan on getting the AFX ECU and i want to be able to rev it to 8300rmp safely. My aunt has a Prelude H22a 2.2liter DOHC stock revlimiter is at 8200 i believe.

well what I would really really like to see is someone making custom oilpans and engine mount so that we could bolt one in. I would buy something like that almost immediately. I could build the 2.4 myself and that would also allow VT to sell built 2.4s instead of just worrying about stroking the 2.0. I know that if I go bigger I would atleast like a larger 2.2 to work with.

I think motofool is working on 2.4 swap kits.

REALLY? Good, Good. :7 Motofool, if you read this, let me know when your done. Ive called a LOT of places looking for someone who could do the fabrication with no luck. It was like trying to find someone to put my stock sides on (called about 20 places, no luck)

We're working on some of the pricing for the Stroked 2.0L and the 2.4L.
As with the other naming schemes we use, the Stroker 2.2 will be the FTY DomesticKiller 420A, and the 2.4 liter will be the FTY SerialKiller 420A. They'll use similar parts that we use in the other blocks we build for the 420A - Eagle rods and CP pistons. I'd rather use the Pauter's in the 2.4L, but I know that's a little on the costly side because they're custom rods. Eagle makes rods for the 2.4L engines, so we're set using off-the-shelf Eagle rods with that.
Check our sites for the pricing on the engines we're releasing here in the next few days. We're also coming out with head packages here within the next 48 hours.
Thanks guys, -Scott FasterThanYou

I suppose I could do that. I thought it was pretty obvious, though :D
By the way, our head packages are online. Check them out :)

Motofools buidling a 2.4 block for me now. Should be done hopefully by the end of summer.

why reinventing the wheel for thousands of $$$$$ ????

see that thing ? it's a Chrysler 2.4 block, with a 2.0 head and srt-4 pistons rods and rings
doesn't cost $4500 for an engine with both displacement and strong internals and it's not a nightmare of conception either

not for long !
saturday I'm going to see Wheatking he's loaning me a full set of accesories starting next week i'm developping a set of adaptors that will bolt on the existing holes of the 2.4 and they will also provide the correct bolt pattern for our accesories no more hacking :nono
it's gonna be more bolt-on than ever
engine mount adaptor will follow soon too I have lots of nice contacts in machine shops

When youre done, can you please hit up Motofool and help him out with some of your inventions, im sure that'll help the rest of us too since he's working on the same thing. The easier my 2.4 install , the faster I can get it on the road.

hehe, it was, but its easier for people to just click the link instead of actually having to think about it. the easier it is for someone who wants to buy stuff, the better!

that i will do, last i was in your shop i was asking about them hehe.

Matt - Everybody has been asking about them!
The 2.4 we build is nowhere near $4500 - Damn that's expensive!
