56663, Scenario, you tell me what's wrong
Posted by Joe B Slow, Aug-05-03 09:30 AM
K, so my car just died out of no where the other day while I was driving.

Today I go to tinkering around under the hood. Unplugged plug wires, they look good. Saw a relay on the firewall that looked kinda loose, so I took it out and plugged it back in good. Unplug the coil pack harness and blow away any of the dirt that's on there. Plug that back in. Unplug battery's + terminal, let it sit for a while. Put that back on...start the car and it starts. BUT...it dies again like maybe 5 minutes later.

wtf is going on?

My list so far:

Coil pack

What do you guys think?

Ive replaced the fuel filter, plugs are fairly new and plug wires look good like i said.

Sounds like a bad hot wire or an unhappy ECU. Thats just my best guess.

Ya know there was this bad smell coming from the engine compartment, but it wasnt the fishy smell ive heard bad ECUs give off. The ECU, i think anyway, was making this God awful noise too. Would that indicate anything?

please describe the smell and noise.

usually a noice/smell combo is you used some bad fuel and it have the hamster in the wheel down there gas. hence the fart noise and the god awful stink. }( jk

let us know what it sounded and smelled like and we can try to help.

smells like burnt tranny fluid, but it isnt. close to that smell if you know how that smells. Its funny you say bad fuel, because maybe 15minutes or so before it died i had just put in ten bucks from Exxon.

^^^ adds a whole new chapter to the scenario.

and the beep well its like:

beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

until i unplug the batter and it goes away.

btw its a high pitch beep from hell. really annoying

I think the ECU makes a high pitched whine like that all the time (mine does anyway), but if it's a noise that's louder than normal, it could be trouble. I wonder if you would see improvement from a bottle of octane booster or something in the meantime? :wary

Update: sorta lol

Took off coil, gunna test it here in a minute.

Took out spark plugs. One of the "arches" of the spark plug is half way white. One of the others is beginning to turn white. And the other two look fine. This makes me think the coil pack is bad since it fires 1-3 2-4 style, my numbers may be wrong but you get the idea with the companion cylinders.

Will update once i test it, and yea im hoping that noise is just something i dont normally hear because i dont usually stick my hood under the hood everytime i shut it off lol

Another question, you know how some computers will sound off a certain beeping code to indicate a problem, will a car ECU do the same?

Your problem might be your ASD relay
THe beepin, high pitch is what the ECU does when it starts its like an electrical circuit test (could be a bad ECU I guess, try and get a donor and test it,

FIXED IT, thanks Dino.

turned out the wire to my cam angle sensor was frying on my EGR pipe. That was the smell i was smelling, burning rubber. It burnt all the way through the sheath around it, bad news. So i elec taped it and got it as far away from the pipe as possible. Runs good now, but i think i still need a new coil, cause im getting a CEL for it now. Ive gotten primary/secondary A and B circuits now.
