55778, how do you know when to stop porting? Posted by KSeclipse, Jul-22-03 06:16 PM
i have my intake manifold out cuz my cars in the shop for a week and i've been cutting at it for a few days w/my dremel taking lots of metal out. Is it possible to do too much?

The idea is to make the openings at the ends of the intake runners the same shape/size as those on the head (and where the 2 pieces of the intake mani come together). If you open the runners up more than the ports on the head, all that air is just going to hit a wall right before combustion. Maybe not the ideal outcome of a P&P job? :P
Just make everything match and then get it all as smooth as you can and you will be alright, imo. (I highly reccommend the 120 grit flap wheel sander bit - lasts a long time and smooths everything out like a champ) :thumbsup

Hey, I'm in the middle of porting too. http://us.f2.yahoofs.com/users/3f1ed1be_32e/bc/My+Photos/intake+port.jpg?bcrTtH_ADWAQCZGf
What did you guys do to the little dent on the upper part? TIA

So you guys aren't porting the inside of the runners at all?

okay to clear up what i asked, i've ported the top part hella, can i just match the ports onto the lower and leave the bottom ports where it goes into the head the same? cuz all i've done so far is upper. and i've done it a shit load.

I'm not sure what you mean there do0d. Are you saying that since you took so much material off the tops of the runners, you want to *offset* the manifold so that the edge you didn't get yet matches up (sorta split the difference so to speak)? I don't know about that.
I didn't do anything to the ports on my head since it was still assembled and all that. I just ground out the openings on the runners to the lines where you could see the EGR funk outline (meaning where there was interference) and then I just tried to get them pretty smooth.
I couldn't get the entire runner, so I just bored out the ports to match in size and then used my grinder bit to take off some of the rough casting along the walls as far back as I could go (and especially in the corners!). Then I took that flapwheel sander and went over it all because that thing is really good for getting a nice, smooth surface. I ran the flex attachment about as far as I could go in and just moved it around in there.
I could've done a much better job had I not been in a hurry, but I think I still see gains from doing it. Maybe sometime I'll find another mani and I can take my time and do it super nice. ;)

thanks so much for replying but you confused me as much as i probably did to you lol. basically there's the upper and lower part. I took them apart and started the upper. I ported the opening where the t.b. goes on. and then i went to the four runner hole things and bored them out bigger. Then i went inside each runner and hogged it out an ass load. Now i have to do the bottom but on the bottom can i just not touch the part where it meets the head and just do the part that contacts the upper. LIke just try and port match it w/the upper?

Were the bottom meets the top port JUST the bottom opening and blend the rest in this is called pocket porting. Where the manifold meets the head get a manifold gasket square in up with the bolt holes make sure you DO NOT move the gasket and take a sharpie and trace the inside of the gasket where your porting. Remove the gasket and only grind off where your sharpie marked. once you have the outer part to the right size and shape start blending the ports back about an inch and a half. Start and complete one at a time. I wish I had a pic of my 2.2 mani. to show you what I mean. I hope this helps:thumbsup
