Yeah guys alright. So I bought a 40 Dollar ebay cold air intake a while ago, hooked it up and it was working fine but the dam bracket that bolts to were the stock air box was broke off. and i couldnt drive around without it the cai intake was to big it would fall off. so i took of the second tube and just put the filter on the first one. but the filter was basically resting on the engine, it was only only getting hot air. so im saving up for a V2 AEM CAI but I dont want to drive around with a shitting intake thats only hot air until then.

So I took the second pipe (the broken one with the missing bracket. Measured it and took my saw and cut off about 4-5 inches of it and hooked it up normaly to the first pipe and put the filter on the second. The filter rests basically EXACTLY were the stock air box was. To the right of the two fans by radiator. So basically its a short ram intake. yay.............:rolleyes

Good to see people using the search function to try and answer their questions. It's perfectly fine where it is. As a matter of fact without a bypass valve, I would prefer to run a short ram filter to prevent hydrolock. The couple extra horsepower from the colder air is not worth the risk of destroying your engine.

Thanks. Fear of hydrolock was my main reason for shortening it and also because I didn't like seeing it so close to the ground where dust, etc. is. To do it first I cut the pipe, then had a guy with a tig welder weld a bead around the end of the pipe so the filter would stay on. With the end cut with a pipe cutter it left it kind of rough so I sanded it down, but it's still a little rough. Do you think that would cause any problems besides the air maybe swirling a little in the pipe?

No, it will not make any noticable difference. I would just make sure the very tip of the pipe is smoother so it won't cut the rubber filter coupler part when maybe trying to fit it on.

I made the end smooth enough the rubber end to the filter wouldn't be cut, it's just the inside of the pipe that's a little rough. Just wondered if it would be bad because I figured the air would swirl a bit in the pipe.

don't worry about the air swirling due to roughness inside the pipe, it won't make much of a difference. just make sure there's no metal shavings/burrs that can get sucked in.

Well then sounds like you're all set. Good decision on having the bead welded on.

I have drove my car in the rain with a cai for years now and have had no problem or fear of hydro locking. The only way you'll hydro lock is if you go into a really deep puddle were the cai would end up submerged in water.

There have been people on this site that have claimed to hydrolock just driving in wet conditions and not driving through deep puddles so that isn't always true.

Well I was driving in a huge rainstorm and ya it can happen without submerging the filter into a puddle. Example: when your driving on an old paved road where there are depressions where cars have been driving all those years and water sits in there and you're forced to drive in those water filled ruts due to oncoming traffic....ya not the greatest situation...can you say CEL?!?!
