I have 52000 miles on my car right now and I'm already starting to think about my tune-up. I called the dealer and he wants 526$ for a new timing belt installed, and 200$ for new water pump( Do I really need a new water pump at this time?), and they are not going to charge me for putting on the AFX udp.(He advised me not to get this because it causes valves to bend)I also asked him how much for the installation of new cam gears and they told me to go somewhere else. They said I would need new cams too if I did that. What do you guys think? 526$ I think is a little to much.

The price is up there with what a dealer charges, you could probably find a guy to install the timing belt for like $400+...
I would worry more about the fact that this guy has no clue what he is talking about. There is no possible way a UDP could cause valves to bend. If he was talking about the cam gears, that is possibly if, you can adjust the cams that far and I don't "think" 10 degrees is enough. I would find another place to do the work, or talk to a tech who is actually going to do the woprk. Because form the sound of it this guy doesn't know what he is talking about.

Satan will always be over-priced. Period. I've heard of a lot of people changing the water pump during a t-belt change just because it's there and (usually) cheap to do (rather than doing the whole thing again later when it does go). If you don't have the skills to do it yourself or a shop you trust, all I can suggest is to try calling other dealerships in your area to try and get the lowest price. By the way, how does the dumbass explain bent valves from a UDP?? I think I've heard it all now.

I just had my timing belt changed, but I found a dealership who only charged me $460. That included ALL of the belts, as well as replacing the idler pulley.

It sounds like he wants to charge you for the whole 60K tune-up. Going that route is a waste of money, in my opinion. I asked, and the extra $200 goes to things like replacing your fluids and just INSPECTING your brakes. Actually FIXING anything would add more money. You can save $200 bucks by doing it yourself, as most of it is very basic stuff.

I asked about the water pump, and the guy I spoke to sounded surprised that I wanted to get that done. He said that they hardly ever fail, making it hard to justify the price. Basically, he talked me out of getting my pump replaced right now. (I am at 121K miles!)

I actually have a spare water pump laying around now, if anyone is interested.

if i was you i wouldn't go to a dealership. i went to a shop and got my timing belt and valve gasket changed and another ECU installed for 328

I'll check other dealers tomorrow. I'm only at 53000 now. The only thing is this small screaching noise from the belts. They need to be tightened or be replaced. But what about the no charge for installing the udp? Do you think I would come out even by paying that much? Just 526$ for the timing belt and installation for the new udp? They aren't going to charge me for the installation. And they don't advise this the guy said. I wanted new cam gears at the same time but I don't know if it would be worth it. How much hp gain am I going to see with new cam gears?I don't know yet. Maybe someone with cam gears can tell me if they felt a difference.

well as far as i know about udp's you shouldn't be charged for it. well....at least this shop wouldn't. because everything would be off to put it on....i think. i've never done it but someone can correct me if i'm wrong. but you can just look around. doesn't hurt

hey I found a way better deal at this local shop. My dad had some work done there so I checked it out. 323$ to change the timing belt and labor. Plus they are going to put on my udp. He even said he could probably get the belt for less. Anyways anybody out there with new cam gears. Did you feel any difference? Is it worth it? I made a mistake the dealer did say it was the new cam gears that would bend valves. Do I need to get new cams when I get new cam gears?
