i have an idea, please tell me what you guys think. i was planning to run a short air intake on my car. but rite where the filter connects to the pipiping, i would have a device like this...

and that other pipe would lead to the center air dam of my car. that would would be connected to some funnel type thingy that i would build which would be about 1 feet wide or so so that i can collect more air in. that cut-out device would work as a switch, so that when i would be at higher speeds and the environment is rite (no dirt or debri) since it IS a non filtered intake if i do that, i would be able to use that ram air effect, and when im worried about water or anything, i can switch back to my normal short ram with the flip of the switch. i don't know how the cut-out works yet exactlly, but i will find out. and by using the short ram off the line i won't be losing that much low end power, instead of just using the ram air idea off the line. please tell me what you guys think. i drew this up, but it is extremely a ruff draft, but hope you get the idea. thanks

sounds like a plausable idea, but why switch it back and forth you aint gonna gain much just with that ram air just take it off when your on the streets and put it on when on the track. i dont know where you can find a switch to do that from the inside of your car though??

i found it off ebay. i was planning on using the ram air on the streets TOO. that's why i needed the switch, so what do you think?

Would there be any sort of filtration on the ram air duct? Or is it straight air into the mani for short spurts (i.e. pissing on a civic for a bit) then switch back to normal short ram for typical driving?

Also, I'm not sure about the diameter of that exhaust switcher thing. A typical exhaust from what I understand is 2.5" and a short ram stack is 3" generally speaking. a CAI may fit it better but that valve looks like it may cause some restriction in the air flow path as well...

no, it won't have any type of filter, thats' why i said depending on the condition of the road, then you decide if you want to use it or not.

here is a picture of my ram air i recently added an aluminum scoup that catches the air as it goes over the hood i will get pictures up soon ,some people would be suprised of how well this works at over 60 miles an hour the box that houses the air filter is completly sealed therefore the only air coming in is from the top of the hood and theres only one place it can go ,,,in the engine ,i know it works cause the car fells faster over 50 mph and because at wot my a/f gauge drops down two notches around 70 mph where as at 30 at wot its at the standard level ,basically means i m getting more air and need more fuel

Dude, don't waste your time. For a few reasons.

1. No filter, I don't care how good your perception of road quality is, you're gonna get bugs and dirt and shit flying in there and it will fuck up your engine.

2. Switching between the two....why? Your cold air from the outside will be better for your engine on low end than that hot air in your engine bay provided by the short ram. If it's for hydrolock reasons I understand, but it's pointless to try to switch it while racing.

3. "Ram air" doesn't provide us with enough noticeable HP to really justify doing all this shit. Sorry man, but just doesn't work that way for us.

4. Your big ass ram air induction (in drawing) will block airflow to radiator :nono

hey guys, well dude.. really its a very bad idea to run without any type of filter no matter where you put/angle the intake tube. the trade off getting 1-2hp with this idea to fuckin suck some shit into your engine which can lead to your engine getting mess up is not worth it. lets put it like this.. i had a short ram intake before, it was the best mod for n/a then i got a aem cold air and really it was not even a big big deal unless the temp had changed alot.. this is what i did, summer cold air, rain time i put the short ram in because i dont want to fuck up my engine. but you know what its your car not mine.. if it was my car i would 'not' do it.

I'm with him ^^^. Bad idea without a filter. If you put a filter after the switch (between the switch and the manifold) you would be good IMO.

y not just modify one of those intakes for the hondas that LOOK like a front mount intercooler...they have filters built in and mount just like what you're looking for?

I have heard it said you need to be going over 150mph to get any true "ram-air" effect. I think that most of any improvement people report is due to just getting colder air in.

And running without any sort of filtration is generally accepted to be a bad idea. Potential cost of a new engine for a few hp?

thats cool as fuck, but how do you keep the water from getting in? i've been interested in doing a ram-air power hump for some time but i'm unsure of the fabrication process and how to keep water from getting in the ram-air and into the intake.
