55345, Cam Gear Adjust on TURBO
Posted by wakeboard99, Jul-16-03 05:05 AM
Hey guys,

I've spent the last hour looking through old posts about cam gears.. and it's a topic that has been discussed time and time again, but i don't see one posting about how to adjust a stock cam with a turbo engine.

I read a turbo magazine article about a custom Focus turbo kit that was dyno'd before and after the stock cam gear adjustment... and there was almost a 45 hp jump from 225 to like 270. I'm sure that i'm missing out on some huge potential here, but i don't feel comfortable without atleast getting some of your tried results. So do any of you turbo guys have this setup, that has been working for you.. maybe even some dyno results.

Thanks - Jay

I didn't know you could adjust stock cam gears.

LOL.. i missed a comma, it should have read. stock cam, gear adjustment. The cam is stock, the cam gears are AEM

I would suggest advancing the intake cam to reduce overlap, just play around with it andsee what feels good.

I just bought the aem cam gear, a friend is going to install it and adjust the exhaust gear, i will let you know how it runs, also, when i dyno it.

Be careful adjusting the exhaust gear, since the cam position sensor sits on the end, I feel better about playing more with the intake cam.

I read about similar gains on a turbocharged neon. Someone definitely needs to explore this on a wideband with a dyno.

There are sizeable HP gains to be made with this, from what I've heard.

That's sounds like a volunteer, my friend :)

I wanted a direction to start with. I know the NA guys are running 4-6% - exaust timing.. but i doubt the turbo should be the same.

If any thing wouldnt you want to retard the timing for less chance for detination so you can run more boost?

Matt_95tgs just put on adj cam gears on his car, along with the crane #14 cams. He has access to a dyno close by, at VT Engines. If time permits he is going to dyno on friday morning to fine tune before the shootout. I'm VERY curious to see what the cams do with a turbo, and also the cam gears. I would think those two together, 50 HP is def possible..

Actually.. it is proven that 50 whp is obtainable with just cam gears, and some time on the dyno to tune them right. If you combine appropriately timed cam gears with high performance cams.. i wouldn't be supprised to see 100+ whp.

So no-one at all has actually dyno tuned their cam gears.. i'm VERY supprised.

i think ur talkin about ignition timing
when u adjust ur cam gears u can advance or retard when they open. when the piston is going from bdc to tdc the exhaust valve opens and as the piston nears the top the intake valve starts to open while the exhaust is still open. With cam gears u can adjust when these open and create more power. EX. u can advance ur intake a couple degrees so it opens earlier so when the exhaust gases r going out it will pull more of the air fuel mixture in which will give u more af in the cylinder and give u more power but at the same time u can advance it to far and not let out all the exhaust gases and hurt ur power so u just have to mess around and find what works for ur car.

but anyways once my turbo kit gets here from race prep i'm going to the dyno to tune my cam gears and tune a little with my safc 2 i'll let u guys know what our cars tend to like with turbo. I'm gettin a good deal on it 80 bucks for as many runs as i want.

thanx for clearing that up man :-) boy do I feel like a :+ oh well now I learned something new. thanx again. Oh yeah on the subject of AEM cam gears is it true they are not marked right for our motors?

What do you mean by not marked right? Mine seem to work fine:thumbsup

When my star stage 2 gets here, I'll dyno tune mine as well. I get as many runs as I want for 100 bucks. Not bad.

yes AEM had problems with their first release. The new and improved ones should have the marks fixed and the better bolts.

Umm.. i have AEM.. when did they Fix them.. and how can i tell if i have the defective ones?

not to burst your bubble but there is no way to get 50hp just from the cam gears. you can expect 7-10 hp from the cam gears at most. Maybe with 274 cams and cam gears you might get 50 hp

in import tuner they picked up around 7 or 8hp at the wheels i think so it should help alot for people that have gone turbo
