I was driving today and found, by accident, that when you take off from 1st gear, you can shift at 3000 RPMs with out touching the clutch at all. I was in downtown traffic and I shifted all the way to 4th gear without touching the clutch once.

It slips into gear almost smoother than when I actually put the clutch in to shift. Its smooth as silk. No grinding, no forcing it into gear, no nothin. I don't even have to be quick about it. I just shift like normal once I hit the 3000RPM mark.

Pretty cool...

You can actually do it faster than 3000rpm's also. I have done it many times, I'm not sure if it causes any damage, but I asume since it's not making any bad noises it can't be...

Can anyone shed some insight here??

well, if you do it right youll save wear on your clutch obviously...but if you force it and start grinding gears and such you might bend something or cause premature wear on the tranny. big rigs dont use clutches to shift....but they drive for a living so they know how to do it quite well.

I do it all the time. Higher or lower rpms, it doesn't matter.

Damn for real? A friend of mine was telling me once that he drove a 2g and he didn't have to press the clutch to shift. I was like, 'yea right man' and he's like 'for real!'. He couldn't tell me if it was a turbo or non-turbo since he only borrowed the car, so I never tried it.

I'm gonna try it tomorrow though, I assume you let go of the gas a little bit to shift?

I really don't think so. Like I said, the gears are grabbing all by themselves. Its pretty damn cool and, again, smooth as silk.

I can vouch once again...It is a smooth transition between gears if done right. I would like to here from some tranny pros on this.

Can anyone enlighten us?

alright alright...its completely safe, my clutch has blown 2 times and ive had to drive home like that but if you miss a gear doing it then ur synchros get unsynchronized and you have to use the clutch to fix it. It will do it in any manual car too.
