i thought 95-96 were the same, and 97-99 were the same....fuel system wise

I have a late-build 96...found it out the hard way when replacing my fuel filter last year. I had to use the 97 Filter. So I'm assuming I have the 97 fuel setup.

I have a friend with a 97 ECU in a 98. should be the same i would think, unless they changed some connections/harnesses on the ECU itself. his has ran fine with it for over a year now thouch, turboed also.

But if you see your Fuel Filter in the location that I am working on, you will know that you are a late model 96. To be honest, I'm not exactly sure when mine was built, but I know it is a late model just due to this fact.

edit: believe me, I was pissed off when I was trying to fit the 96 Fuel Filter into the bracket on my car. IT JUST WOULD NOT FIT! TOO BIG! I took it back and said it was the wrong part. They said I was crazy. Got my refund. (Checker in the ghetto by my house). Went to the next auto parts store, they gave me the same part. (Checker in the burbs). I told them it was wrong, and went to the NEXT store. (Autozone in the burbs). Some chick behind the counter knew my situation, and gave me the 97 FF. Worked like a champ. So essentially a 20 minute job turned into a few hours since a few autoparts stores were incompetent. (I guess it would've helped if I knew this beforehand, but hey, it's not my job.) :+

it has nothing to do with the fuel system, it depends on the different wiring to differrent pins on the ecu harness. thats it

and I wouldnt run the afx with a turbo it advances timing tooo much

To clear up somethings in hear, this is how the ECU's are:

95-OBDI ECU (one big harness), only works on 95s
96-OBDII ECU (two smaller harnesses)
97-OBDII ECU same as 96 but 1-2 pin differences
98-99 same as 96 & 97 just 1-2 pin difference between them

I have a 96 Talon running a 97 computer for two months, runs fine. I have seen post of people running 97 ECUs on 98 cars and doing fine.

Look in the Chiltons Manual it shows all pin differences.

Think about it like this. I got a 97 HP computer and a 2003 Compaq computer. Internal are hella different, but the harnesses for my printer, monitor, mouse, keyboard (car sensors) are the same and work fine.

He is registered on the board, but hasnt posted in a LONG time. just t oclear things up, he DOESNT have the AFX ECU on a 98, he has a stock 97 ECU on a 98.

ok Talon speed if that is true than why does my 95 talon have obd II?
All my diagnostics match to 96 how ever my car is a 95. manufactured in march 95. However my fuel filter is on the firewall.

Talonspeed on this board runs a 97 ECU on his 96 w/o any problems as well.

Oh and the AFX ECU plus Boost = boom or atleast one hell of a tuning nightmare. Id use the money on a rebuild.

well actually...i asked gary about using the ECU with boost, he said it would work just fine...but alas...i'm in a 99 so no fun for me yet.

each year is dissimilar from the others with the exception of 98-99....95 is diff, 96 is diff, and 97 is diff from all others.

The early fuel system is only present in the 1995s. The 1996-1999 are all the same with the filter (and regulater) in back. The '96 and '97 PCMs are the same. The '98 and '99 PCMs are the same. The 1995 is different from all of them, but perfectly capable of being read as an OBD-II.

^^ the 96-97 are infact not the same...they changed the ECU every year slightly untill 98-99. thats why only the 97's can use the afx ecu

ALL 95-99 CAN USE THE ECU, YOU JUST NEED TO SPLICE A COUPLE WIRES DEPENDING ON THE YEAR. If you want the ECU then just get it and look in the chiltons and change the wires, thats it

Since I am looking at the wiring diagram right NOW. I am gonna try to explain this AGAIN.

ALL 95 cars are OBDI.

ALL 96+ cars are OBDII (there is a law about this)

95-ECU totally different from other years
96-99 Here are the differences:

-96&97 use a different wiring for the DUTY CYCLE PURGE SENLENOID VAVLE(A\T) than the 98&99 ECUs do

-The TO GENERATOR pin on the 96 ECU is B4 and the pin on the 97-99 ECUs are B8, but pin is in same location on diagram

-The wiring going to the ignition coil is different. The 96&97 ECUs use pin B2 while 97-99 ECUs use B11, but pins are in same location

That is ALL THE DIFFERENCES. The 95 ECUs have a totally different layout.

i have the bastard child of ECUs (ODBI) and i was under the impression that some of the ODBII monitors that work on GMs and Chryslers would work on my car as well, but i haven't tried this out (read it on one of those datalogger websites, probably just trying to make you buy the thing)

my car cant be read as obd I. It has been tried the scan tool said no communication, refresh it is a 95 w/ fuel filter on fire wall. It will read fine as obd II. I had to replace it once and the 95 comp I ordered would not work. The number on my checked as a 96 and so they exchanged it for 96 and it worked fine. Wierd but good discussion. I can post the numbers if someone want ot look them up or now where to look them up.

id MUCH rather have an OBD1 computer, than my OBD2. much less tuning headaches. so you dont have the "bastard child", consider yourself lucky.

FINALLY IT IS DONE.

I installed a 97 AFX ECU on my 96 Eagle talon last night. Works fine. NO CEL, no stalling, nothing. The revs do stop at 8200. And the car is alot faster. I have a built valve train so it pulls hard. I will make a post about it later.

I just sent an email to Howell asking them to check this thread and make sure everyone understands this thing. If this ECU takes to boost, and high compression, Daisy is going to get really ugly in the next couple years...
