54481, Dual SIDE Exhaust, possibility im considering Posted by Eagle 5, Jul-03-03 08:48 AM
Ok, I know people say that dual exhausts really dont help any and are usually only for show. Thats fine. But here is what im thinkng about doing, but would probbaly cost too much to do. but would be cool.
Dual Side Exhausts...like the older Vipers have. The hardest part here is finding a way to get the exhaust to the sides. there is a nice spot that would be great for it to come out but getting it there would be a problem. body work would have to be done. its the spot right in front of the rear wheel just below the crease line.
Now I also know someother stuff about dual exhausts. I am thinking the best way for it to work is start out at 3" after cat and have it split into 2 smaller pipes. no bigger than 2.5" each though because 2 2.5" pipes will flow more than a single 3" pipe will and the gases will be moving slower through the 2 smaller pipes. Now 2 2" pipes is too small because 1 3" pipe flows more than 2 2" pipes do. the exhaust gases would speed up through the 2" pipes but you would have back pressure then. SO im thinking that the best would be to go form 3" pipe into 2 2.5".
1 3" pipe has area of 7.069 in^2 1 2.5" pipe has area of 4.909 in^2 1 2.25" pipe has area of 3.976 in^2 1 2" pipe has area of 3.14 in^2
so having 2 2.25" pipes will have an overall area that is about 1 in^2 bigger than the 3" pipe. SO i would think that going from a 3" pipe into 2 2.25 pipes would be the best because the exhausts ases will still be flowing pretty well and woul not slow down too much.
Does anyone have any opinions on this?
also, does anyone know if a Dual exhaust eclipse (will eb turboed) sounds good or not?

They sell a dual exhaust kit for the turbo eclipse, but there is no issue of back pressure/exhaust velocity because of the turbo. The split occurs right infront of the rear axle where the factory piping is in the center of the car. The whole kit with mufflers is 699 and way to much money where a good shop could rig something up for cheaper. My friend had tried your idea and did this.... he put "T" pipe in front of the axle and ran the exhaust pipes straight out the sides in front of the rear tires. It was a pain without hangers and adding heat sheilds beacue of the brake and fuel lines and fixing the side skirts to look normal with exhaust pipes coming out of under them. I beleive he had low low blitz sides and had only 2 inch tips so he didnt hit the ground. The exhaust didn't run the side like the viper but came out like the saleen mustang or svt lightning does... Looked hot, but made the low end torque almost non-exstant... I can draw out a better picture if that would help. . .

i think i understand what you are saying, but draw a picture anyway. i was thinking about this but not sure if i would even do it though. it was an idea and i understand that it may not be as good as say a 3" straight back.

didn't we talk about this in the chat dood? i don't think that you should do it. you'll lose power.

Look if you want the duel side exhaust look run one pipe into a self made duel tip. make the tip long enough so you can't tell its a single pipe. make the tipe 1.5" thick and 5.5" wide w/ a divide plate in the center for the duel look. use 2.5" piping unless boosted and angle cut it for a clean look. Only do it on one side(drivers side) or you will get a good drop in power, make that bad drop in power. I'f you don't under stand what I meen take a ruler and a pen and draw it up as discribed:thumbsup good luck:-)

If he is going turbo, he won't lose power. The saying goes "the best exhaust for a turbo car is no exhaust." at least that's what I've always heard. The turbo itself causes enough backpressure. somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm not.
EDIT:it would be cool on a turbo car if one side was regular exhaust, and the other side was an O2 dump.

i think i know what you mean. i also thought that if it was straight back and then split almost right before the mufflers and they were angled out, almost liek the NSX has, but not so much that it looks horrible.
i dont know. i was just contemplating the idea.
Also, the car will be turboed.

The pic is of a dual exhaust but on the site it is only a single 3" exhaust. the pic is not of the exhaust they are selling. but that is sort of what i meant by it. but instead of them coing out the bakc, haivng them go out the sides

They used to sell the dual but I see that they only do that single 3 now. When my friend did the side on it was set up just like that way except for the exhaust just went straight out the side. If you do it like that is set up there is a space right in front of the rear axle but it has to be small and ajusted with heat sheild b/c of the brake and fuel lines

a good idea for those that have asshole cops or have to pass emmisions, or just want to be a sleeper can have that dual muff deal, and get a straight pipe etc on one side and have it split with that little electronic exhaust flapper thing that i saw on here a long time ago and have the other side stock exhaust, or some other aftermarket muff that is quiet. just and interesting thought i had.
