54234, machined block + non-machined head = trouble?
Posted by DR1665, Jun-30-03 11:49 AM
Here's my situation:
We have this 95 block machined and ready to go together, but the head turned out to have 4 leaky intake valves and the other 4 intake valves are "questionable."
Should I intall this head with the leaky valves, which orignally was on this block, or should I use my 97 head which has not been tested?

I'm thinking, I would rather install my current head, which even though I don't know it's condition 100%, I know works "fine," than install one that I know is faulty. I plan on doing headwork this year sometime and I'm thinking that if the head gasket leaks on me a couple months down the road, I can replace it when I do the head.

The main reason I'm doing this rebuild is because of massive head gasket leakage in the usual spot, but my machine shop won't assemble an engine with parts I didn't buy from them and, more importantly, I have no more money at all.

Discuss, please. TIA! ;)

Your '97 head, go with the one you aren't havign problems with rather than the oneyou know has problems.

Rebuild the other when money permitas and get the work done to it the way you want.

Brian... you failed to mention how many miles are on your 97 head.

I personally think its best to keep the head that came on said block. just get the valves resealed. I would highly doubt they are bent.

Edit: I say this becuase you know that head is perfectly mated to that block. We ran into this issue with a civic...tried to slap brand new b16 head on a block with 40k miles on it...wouldnt fit quite right...head wouldnt seal properly wiht the head gasket. Fixed the old head and it slapped right on and sealed.

I mean yes, it should work, its technically the same head but If it were me and I had a choice. I would use the head that came off that block.

yah use your working head. use the other head if you plan to fix it only. it does not matter if you use a 95 block with a 97 head if you are wondering. it makes no sense to put a mess up head on.

as long as the deck of the head is true then your good to use the 97. I know you said you have NO cash but I really think you shouldnt put the motor back 2gether without adressing your cyl. head. You dont want to drop a valve threw your new short block just my .02

IMO, dont waste your time without doing something to use either of the heads. Both of them have higher milage, and if your 97 one is ok now, it could be just a matter of miles before a stem seal starts to leak, ect.. It really isnt that much money for a basic valve seat grind, and valve stem seal replacement. That way, you can have them resurface the head to be sure its nice and flat. Yeah, its more money, but its the right thing to do. If the 97 head had less miles on it, then i would say just to slap it on there..

It costs about $75 around here to have a head redone with new seals, cleaned, and resurfaced. Since it's aluminum, I wouldn't risk an annoying HG leak due to the head not being perfectly flat. Could you imagine the grief you'd experience merely for being a lil cheap?

And this is coming from a big cheapskate.
