instead of 13.2, it's like 16.5 to 17.2. I've spoken to nitrouseclipse about it and ironically he had the same problem. His wire was grounding out. I haven't checked my wires yet, but let's hope that it was just a grounding problem. Anyone else had the same problem?

edit: if you're wondering I did get a CEL 41 and 46 which is overcharging and alternator harness fucking up.

Yeah, that shit can happen if the regulator goes bad.

it just happens at random sometimes also. I've checked the wires and there's nothing shorting out. I even tightend the alternator belt a little bit more. What regulator are you talking about Jim?

Unfortunately our regulator is part of the alternator. If you do a search Armond rewired it to accept a stand alone regulator. He was getting to low a voltage at idle and other running problems, wired up the regulator and problem solved.

Our voltage regulators are part of the ECU, not the alternator, they are external. least i know my 97 is that way. if it isnt the wires, have your alternator checked at a place like Advanced Autoparts. if it checks out fine, then it is most likely a bad voltage regulator, and you will need a new ECU. if you need the ECU, ive got you hooked up. :-)

Couldn't find any expose wires. So I drove around today and the car was fine. ???. But I'm not doubting that it won't happen again. So if it does happen again, my only explanation is the ECU. I have a 97 RS too. If there is a write up to rewire for a 97 I'd like to know where to find info on it otherwise I'll get an ecu from Nitrous.

but will that work on 97 models? I wouldn't mind if voltage was lower, but 16+? Wouldn't look to nice if that battery explodes. It hasn't happen again, but I believe underhood temp has something to do with it. I haven't driven around long enough the get the temp up.

As far as I know, the voltage regulator is part of the alternator, BUT the ECU controlls the regulator's output. Usually when the V regulator goes bad, you get very high voltage. This means you need a new alternator, as I have never heard of an ECU failure when it comes to alternator ouput voltage, but I suppose anything is possible. Def have that alt checked out somewhere that tests them, like Autozone,ect..You prob got that CEL for voltage because the ECU is having problems with controlling the voltage regulator, most likely because the reg is bad.

on a side note...call around to make sure that the auto parts place CAN check the alt. autozone told me they couldnt test mine, but ive heard of others having thiers tested at advanced auto et al. it would suck to get the alt. out only to find out you cant get it checked out anywhere.

Clicky on the Symtech link at the top of the page, they make an external regulator so that you don't have to replace the ECU if the built in regulator goes bad.

If you didn't understand that, the regulator is built into the ECU. pretty stupid design IMO
