53580, AEM Cold Air Intake vs. 50 dollar Ebay Cold Air Intake
Posted by csmakio, Jun-21-03 09:25 AM
Hey guys, haha quick question. Ive been looking at Cold Air Intakes for my 96 GS and I came across these two.

Of course name brand. The AEM Cold Air Intake
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/racinglab/mit95ecnonae.html

and the ebay one
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2420136883&category=38634

now common logic would think a 200 dollar intake would be better than a 30 dollar one. but i dont feel like paying 200 dollars for one when a 30 dollar one would do the same thing.

my question is, does the 30 dollar intake work well, or just as well as the 200 dollar one. is it easy to install and does it fit well. anything you guys can tell me would help thanks in advance

nick

I have the ebay intake but I used a huge K&N cone filter in place of the cone filter that came with it and it works perfectly, very noticeable gains and way better than a short ram.

so you think i shouldnt even bother with the AEM and just get the ebay one.

Is it just as easy to install?

Ive got this one, except in silver(they dont offer the silver one anymore). Same way to install any cold air intake. It really doesn't differ between brands. I put a K&N Filter at the end of my piping. I don't trust the kinds of filters that some of the cheaper intakes come with.

Ebay is cheaper and works just the same. The V2 AEM Intake is much bigger then an ebay one, but for the price.....the couple extra hp isn't really worth it IMO. I would rather spend all the money i saved oin other mods that will end up giving me more hp for the dollar :thumbsup

Buy the ebay intake then pickup a modern performance throttle body total they will cost you like $260. Thats pretty damn close to the cost of the AEM by itself and youll get huge gains with that combo.

I got the cheapo ebay short ram intake....I really did not like how it connects to the throttle body...I couldn't get the rubber piece to attach perfectly for the life of me...I kept it on for a while, and changed to a green filter...But now I took it off cause like I said, I never trusted the hold onto the throttle body..If anyone has any suggestions for a better fit, that would be good..

i had the ebay one. obx or whatever. piece of shit. i had it on my car for a while. it rained real bad so i took it off for a few days. put it back on, tightened the fucker as tight as i could and it fell off a day later and dragged on the ground. the filter is fucked and i dont wanna fuck with another cai because it floods easily around here now. plus the bends on the pipe arent as good as the aem. you have to push the splash guard down a lot and there isnt as much air flow as the aem

Modern Performance Throttle body is a 60mm TB which is a big increase over the stock 52mm opening. Everyone that has done it has said its one of the best mods they have done ( Except for those with cruise controll who went through hell to get it to work. ). Basically the bigger the opening the more air your engine can suck in. More air means more power }(

sounds nice, how much does it cost and like what does it connect to and how hard of an install is it? it sounds really really worth it

You can check it out at:
http://www.modernperformance.com

It runs $222 shipped. Not too bad of an install but if you have cruise it can be a bit of a pain to adjust properly.

LOL. just tell him how to put it on. there isn't any other way to learn. i was in that same spot once. the throttle body can be associated with a carbeurator if you know what that is. when you push on your gas peddle, its not really a gas peddle. the accelerator just opens your throttle body, and allows more air to pass through your intake, thus allowing your engine to rev higher. so you can't really flood Fuel injected cars. and by getting a bigger throttle body, you can let more air into your engine faster. same logic as a bigger exhaust. and that is why you'd get a jeep or modern performance throttle body. its bigger. hope that helps a little. someone can add to that but i am in a hurry.
