53535, Frustrated and pretty much out of ideas Posted by Michael_97RS, Jun-20-03 11:53 AM
Well as some of you know my adventures with the head.
Short story ported/polished & milled head installed with copped HG, that blew I redid it with MLS gasket. Now car won't start.
HAs spark to all 4 plugs. I can smell the gas so it seem to have fuel Only engine code that is costant I get a random coil code, but spark is okay, i\s a MAP sigal out of range. Compression is really low around 120psi.(so no surprise MAP is low)
I tore it apart and checked timing, if it's off it's off 1 degree, nothing enough to cause such low compression.
I'm stumped, giove ideas... any ideas, I don't car ehow stupid.
The only thing I have left is to tear the head back off and check for the valves sealing right. (but it ran with a thinner gasket, so it means I somehow bent them).
Help!

I don't think it's fair to look at the compression numbers without warming the engine up first...so I wouldn't blame that right off the bat. Got ARP studs? Did you reuse the headbolts? Reusing the bolts may cause some sort of compression loss, but I'm not sure if it would be enough to cause the motor to flood out. I don't think it would.
Reachin for shit on this one - but check your ground connections. Make sure the head has a good ground to it. You may see a spark when testing it, but it might still be a weak spark...or maybe your grounding the plug to something besides the head to test spark. Seen too many stupid ass problems lately fixed by regrounding.

Another example of why im not a fan of milling the head at all. not saying thats your problem, but ive seen WAY too many problems occur after people have their heads milled down. my only guess is that the MLS gasket isnt sealing either, or your head is warped. if you take it off, have a machine shop test its flatness. www.TeamKLR.com 1997 Silver RS Wiseco 10.5 Pistons Eagle Rods T3/T4 Turbo Custom FMIC Greddy Exhaust 440's

Well, you ahve to see what was different from before, when the HG went but the car turned over, to now where it won't turn over at all.
You're getting spark and fuel, and 120 psi should still be enough compression to get the engine to turn over. Even if you had bad compression in a cylinder (say at 50 psi) then it would still turn over, just run like shit.
If the head is warped or the gasket has failed, then you'd probably see coolant in the oil. I'd check that first Mike (since it's easy to do), if it's not that, reset the timing (I'm sure you can do this blindfolded now), make sure your batter has enough juice, the coils are grounded properly, ect.. all the little stuff is ok.
I can't give you any more than that right now.

have u checked for lose wires/conectors?or check to see if u pinched any with the head or valve cover?its hard to say on sumin like this...is it turnin over at all and just not startin or is it not turnin over?if it was a honda i wouls say walk around it with a hammer and then start workin on it again it will be an easy fix(i did that with my 88 accord and it worked :) )but i really dont know what to say

Brand new Optima Battery in her now (old one was tired). Removed/swapped all ignition components. The MAP code is the only one that pops up... I just pulled UDP and checked timing this weekend, and It's almost dead on, if there's a variance maybe a degree.
I wish I could figure out what was different.
Yeah I don't think she'd respond favorably to be hit with a hammer, I know I wouldn't.
As an anomoly, my A/F gauge (Corbin Special) no longer works.

if your AF gauge doesn't work any more I'd say you either severed or pinched a wire somewhere and caused it to ground out....check your elctrical, not mechanical.

My friend bought a Galant VR-4 that the kid just practically gave away because he could figure out what was wrong with it electronically. He had 2 ecu's and nothiong work. My friend swapped bad injectors and now it starts. Check those maybe, I dunno.
