53339, eBay "Cam Gears" Any takers/Reviews?
Posted by Phaxmohdem, Jun-17-03 01:32 PM
I just ordered my AF/X Pulley kit (Arriving on the 17th, I'll definately do a write up on my experience with it once it arrives for everyone here), but in the process of purchasing this kit, I ran into a Bomz DOHC Cam Gears kit on eBay link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33614&item=2419618298

I was wondering if anyone has this installed, or any knowledge of such a thing and if it would be worth my while to invest in this sort of mod...

Current Mods: Short Ram Intake, Bosch Platinum 4+ Plugs, eBay advance timing Mod chip.

Near Future Mods: AF/X UDP (in transit), Final Drive Gears.

Dreaming of Mods: Hahn Stage 3 Turbo kit

Well, I bought a set. I figured what the hell for $120. Thats nearly half the price of anything else I've seen. They just came in the other day. I tried test fitting them on my old stock cams...and it doesn't look like they fit too good. The main hole(the one in the middle) is ok, but the slot that the cam dowel fits into is too narrow to fit the cam dowel. It doesn't appear to be a press fit issue either. The difference is so much that I think I may have to drill it out that slot a little bit to make it work. Other than that they look pretty good. 10 degrees adjustment either way. Mine are anodized blue.

I'll post about it after I install them...or try to install them.

Ok, I got the pulleys drilled out to fit. Its not that hard to do, but if you do it, just take your time so the dowel fits snugly.

Here's a shot of it installed on a cam.

Here's a closeup of the fitment.

You can see how much more they need to be drilled in order to fit. With the hole this size, it makes a nice snug fit on the cam dowel....and other than the drilling thing - they're pretty good looking gears.

Don't install those pulleys if you intend to use a set of big cams
with 3 bolts only instead of 6 like the more expensive ones they will warp

Thanks for reminding me Alain. I forgot about this, but a while ago I did see some gears advertised like "now with all stainless hardware" - like it was addressing some problem that they had before. Can't remember what brand it was though. Anyways, I took a look at the bolts that come with this Bomz gear, and sure enough they are aluminum. So I just ordered some stainless ones from McMaster Carr. I don't have huge cams but they are pretty big at .377 lift.

These gears are lookin worse and worse aren't they. I mean you gotta drill them and get stainless button head cap screws for them. Ahh, worse that can happen is they shift 1 tooth, right? We'll see I guess.

Damnit. Just because they don't stick to a magnet doesn't mean they're aluminum. The bolts that come with the gear ARE stainless...I just bought a whole pack of stainless bolts for nothing.

So, it's just the drilling thats a problem with these things so far. I'm planning to install them with the new motor....but I'm still waiting on pistons/rods. Hopefully soon though.
