Hi all,

Even though I've been studying this forum for a couple of months now this is my first post, so please be gentle :-). After I got some hail damage repaired on my '98 Talon DL, I developed a CEL. So I plugged in my trusty pocket logger and it came up with "evaporate emission control has detected a leak. (a gross leak)." So since I knew that they had to do some work on the gas tank lid I naturally check the gas cap. It seemed tight but I clicked it a couple of more times cleared the error and figured everything was cool. But to my dismay it came back. So I cleared it again...and again. It still comes back after a bit of driving. So I confronted the body shop because I know they had to do something under the hood...they had to remove the fan shroud or something to protect it from over spray. They basically blew me off and blamed it on my exhaust...even after I explained they exact code and that I did not have this problem before I entrusted my baby to them :rolleyes SO I guess if anyone could give some ideas on other things I can check I would really appreciate it. The gas cap is tight and appears to be in good order. It's probably something really easy it's just kind of frustrating. This whole situation even made me snap at my girlfriend that I love dearly...even if she is jealous of my car;)

This code can happen anytime there is an "air leak" in the fuel system. The fuel system is supposed to be air tight. There are several things that cause this one: bad gas cap, cracked EVAP canister, cracked/leaky evap lines from the canister to the fuel tank, leaky fuel pump cover gasket, rollover valve on top of the tank is messed up.

That should get you started, but I'll say it is a very common CEL to have - I think probably the most common. I hate welcoming people ot the board and telling them to search but...search this forum(Performance) for "EVAP" and I'm sure you could probably find a couple more causes for this problem. EVAP is the short name for the "evaporative emission control system". It's such a piece of shit system that needs to be discussed so regularly that it got it's own 4 letter name :P
