I was wondering if the "ON CAR" Injector Cleaning is any good and worth the money to be performed. I was talking to some local shop here and he said that if you run premium gas that should be good enough because the ethanol will clean them up? I don't believe the whole premium gas theory but goes to tell you what they know here in WI home of the Daimler-Chrysler Plant.

If anythign is gong to clean the injectors it's the detergents they put in the gas, which are not as concentrated as the in the bottle cleaners. Ethanol is made form corn as a fuel addative to "help' combustion. Except that ethanol does not burn as good as gasoline and is ony pout in there to help out the farmers. I suggest using the cleaners every so often. It's not as good as sendign out your injectors t be cleaned, but I think it helps.

So I shouldn't take it in to a shop and have them hook it up to their machine and flush them? Just use Fuel injector cleaner additives?

By FAR the better way to go is to have the shop clean them. I was thinking of doing this every time I do a fuel filter chnage... every 30k miles.

I do pressure cleaning (on car) of the injectors and you can DEFINETLY tell and feel the difference after it is done. If you do normal driving ( freeway/city -some full throttle :) ) I recommend cleaning at about 50,000. IF you do alot of idling and city driving and short trips, I recommend about 30,000 as the injectors can gum up easier. It is not hard to do on our vehicles and I have 49,000 miles on mine and have just done it to mine(for the first time).
Can in the tank helps and GOOD Brand name fuel helps, but pressure cleaning is the best.
How much are they charging? I used to charge $60 to do it but the cleaner went up(Old style discontinued) and I now charge $80. (I charge fellow DSM'ers less ,but remember the kit alone cost me almost $800 and am adding adapters all the time for upgrading it)
MAKE sure you/they clean your throttle body also. You can do that yourself and tell the difference in your idle/off idle. Remove the intake tube from the intake opening. WITH ENGINE OFF, hold the throttle plate open with YOUR FINGERS (NEVER STICK anything inside the opening to hold the plate open as it can nick/damage the throttle plate). Spray carburator/throttle body cleaner into the opening and on to the back of the throttle plate. Use a tootbrush (nothing else) and clean the opening and back into the throttle bore. YOU DO NOT HAVE to remove the throttle body to do this. Spray and brush until clean and then spray the junk out. Give it time to sit for a bit and then start the car. REMEMBER that it will be hard to start because of all the cleaner in the intake/combustion chambers. It will PUFF alot of nasty black smoke and then it should settle down. Idle WILL IMPROVE.

If you get it done, have them explain EXACTLY what they are going to do to the vehicle, and if you have any doubt in thier integrity, stay close by so you can watch them. Easy to say, "YEP, WE CLEANED THEM" and you can't tell if they did or not if you don't see it being done. Takes about 30-45 minutes to do it on our cars.
