52563, Best sounding muffler?
Posted by beikokujin, Jun-03-03 07:43 PM
Just been muffler shopping and I can't find the "right one." I almost bought a GSX muffler but it was banged all to hell. I'm looking for a deep throaty sound through most of the RPM band. Some mufflers I've tried (mostly from local shops) give me the deep sound at idle but then sound like a popcorn fart as soon as I lean into the gas. I know its the nature of 4-cylinder engines, but I gotta believe some of you guys have that tight revvy yet deep sound.

I've got GReddy headers if that makes any difference with stock cat-back exhaust (resonator and all).

Any recommendations?:7

I still love mine...takes awhile to warm up (and sounds really gay before it is) but once its warm...DAAMN!!! IT SOUNDS NICE! I only paid like 200 bucks installed (canadian).

Magnaflow Street Series muffler - got it off of www.roadraceengineering.com under the 3G section. I know a few people here have it and all seem to like it. Awesome muffler for the price!

I have gotten so many compliments on my Weapon R R1 Atom Bomb muffler that I bought 2 years ago. And these compliments aint from lil teens on the street, they are from older guys that I meet up with for the Eclipse meetings that are all serious. I always hear that its nice how my muffler gives a DEEP DEEP sound and stays deep through out hot or cold, doesnt get high pitched at all, I definatly recommend it, but I dont recommend paying the $200 I did for it like a dumbass.

EDIT: And another thing why it sounds so good is because its only 10" long, when you look at mufflers, look at how long they are in length, the shorter the muffler the better it will sound (generally) because what do mufflers do....MUFFLE SOUND...yes kids...Muffle sound.

Not sure about mufflers, but my greddy evo sounds awesome! I had the tanabe racing medallion, and it was incredible. If you want the deepest badest sounding exhaust, go with the tanabe racing medallion. If you want something with better performance(for NA) and something that wont make your ears ring after you park the car, def get the Greddy Evo. It has a low gargle at idle and is slightly louder than stock, and sounds like a louder, deeper intake when you floor it, i love it!

i had the silencer out of my tanabe one day when i left my boss's house and he said he could still hear me shifting when i was over a mile away!!!! he hasn't been the only person to tell me that either. even with the silencer in, the tanabe sounds real sweet!

No thread about best sound exhaust can be complete without: Thermal. Many 420A and many 4G63 DSM owners will tell you...:D

I've never heard a Borla on a car that didn' sound outstanding. I don't know about there new Boomer series... but regular Borla muffler always sound kick ass. Dynomax is good, I stay far away from straight through canister bumble bee Honda mufflers.

Funny you mention that! I had a Borla Boomer on my car before as NA. The Wailtail. I loved it! Sounded great with 2" cat back pipe, but with 2 1/2 I am sure it would rock! I'd recommend it. :D

And the winner is...

I have to admit I've tried almost every muffler mentioned in this thread excluding those that are part of cat-back systems.

Anyway, I went with the R1 muffler. I got about $165 intalled. Sounds good with the silencer and damn good without it. It's short so I get a deep sound throughout the RPM band and it was short enough to be intalled straight (like a stock muffler) and not half-cocked to an angle like most of the other longer mufflers did.

Holy shnikies! A situation where shorter is better, whoa.....:7

This is however, a temporary measure. I'm still saving up for a GReddy cat-back to match my headers.

My SS Borla oval muffler sounds pretty darn nice. Its not that loud, but still gives a very nice tone. If you are still NA, then it will be a bit louder. I had a fart can round Magnaflow on there before and the highway drone from it drove me nuts..
