52504, I wanna go vroom... Help?
Posted by One_Rice_Racer, Jun-03-03 04:12 AM
Well, I was originally planning on selling the ride below, simply because of all the problems it tends to give me. But, sentimentality caught up with me and I've decided to keep it.

Unfortunately, my lack of actual engine/"making cars go vroom" knowledge kind of prevents me from doing what I want with the car. I've tried over the last couple years to find a mentor who really knew what he was doing to show me the ropes, but it hasn't gone well.

Is there anyone out there that is willing to donate some time to teaching me the ropes? I'm just a curious kid that needs a hobby, and my dad isn't much of a mechanic himself.

What are your plans for the car? How do you want to make if fast? All motor? Turbo? Nitrous? What kind of budget are you working with? Just how fast do you want to go?

Once you figure out what you are looking for, there is a wealth of information contained in the main page and the forums here. Plenty to read, and get you started, then go from there with more specific.

yea, the trick is to set some goals, start buying parts, and learn as you go. it may take a bit longer to do some installs, but really, that is how you learn.

2gnt is an infinite resource of info on our cars, and im sure if there is someone who lives around you and you need a hand they can swing by and help you out!

1)Go buy a chilton's manual.
2)Download the dealer eclipse manual.
3)Go to Sears- buy a crapload of craftsmans tools
4)don't be afraid of the car, just start working on it
5)when you crap something up, come back to 2gnt!

AMEN!

Try looking around here for write ups. If you have a Dremel (they're less than $100 and very useful) you can port and polich your throttle body. You can buy a cheap CAI or make one yourself. I would suggest you do a search on write up and see what you come up with. They're the best. Someone else has done the work before and they often have pictures to go with them. Keep at it and never say die! :thumbsup

And yeah, where are you?

Awesome. I didn't expect such a turnout in just a day. Sorry about the lack of description to my post, I did it in my first hour Advanced Computer Applications class (Using my time wisely. }( ) and the class ended before I could finish up.

Alright. For one, when it comes to what I want to do to the car... I'd really like to get it turbocharged, and simply just go all out on it. I mean, this is the problem: Should I turbocharge it? If so, how should I do it, what should I expend my cash on first? I mean, I'm really in the dark on how to put the whole thing together, although now you guys have given me some ideas on reading/just getting down and taking stuff apart. I appreciate it.

The money thing: I am only a teenager making -- ... not a whole lot of cash. I plan on working all this summer, driving the family van (WOO!) to do it, so my cashflow isn't going to be interrupted with the insane insurance prices I have to pay... But, we're talking damn near minimum wage every week. On average I was making somewhere around 230 every two weeks or so? Maybe more or less, just depending on my hours. So I'm not quite blinging, but I'm prepared to devote what I DO have to the car.

I live in Blue Springs, by the way. I saw some of you asking that. Corner of AA Highway and Sunnyside School Road (Down the street from Blue Springs South HS). I used to go up to Hooters every now and again on the weekends when my car wasn't put up and overheating all the time (And yes, I'm taking care of that problem at hand. Radiator fan is just, not working, and my the overflow tank *I THINK THATS WHAT IT IS* split open and leaks all the water. Maybe it's just a "fill tank", I don't know. I only know is that it's no good.)

So there you go. That's the jist of the situation. You guys are awesome.

Outside of the obvious Blitz kit, I've got Matrix air intake, Flowmaster exhaust. Lowered in Tokico springs too. Those are the only engine whatnots. I've got a pair of 12" JBL's in the back, if you consider that a mod? Bwhaha. But yeah, that's it. Most everything I have done is just for looks and sounds.

Note: When I bought the car it already had the exhaust and intake. If these were bad choices, tell me.
