well i've had my eclipse for like 8 months and i've noticed this weird "whistle" sound begin around 3k rpm and continue until redline. The sound seems to be affected more by the throttle posistion which leads me to belive it could be due to the throttle body. I never really payed much attention to it until the guys i hang around really brought it to my attention. The first time i actually heard it for myself was when my friend videotaped a race of me and another n/t. My car whistled loud enough u could hear it on the videotape, u could hear a few ppl say "can u hear that turbo". It was convincing enough sound that they had me pop the hood to show i didn't have a turbo... when i shift and let off the throttle u can hear a low pitch bov type sound. Most of the sound *seems* to come OUT OF the exhaust, for all i know the exhaust could just be acting as a "megaphone" for the sound. I have the stock exhaust and an injen intake.I've heard of just a few other ppl commenting on their cars having a similiar sound but they were saying they got the sound after they placed a 60mm tb on their cars. I don't know whether to enjoy the sound of a turbo or be worrying what's wrong with my car?? So if u know anything let me know please..

most likely the cotton of your filter whistling. mine does it, most peoples does it. anytime you have anything spinning or sucking fast you'll get a whistle noise.

just that it's a seriously ear peircing whistle when im at WOT, and non of my DSM friends have that sound. I have about 14 friends with DSM's and not a single one has that whistle sound, and every one of them have some form of intake. and the sound when i shift like the bov?

Check the vacuum lines and the intake stream for anything that might be causing a whistle. Try trading filters with someone for an hour or so...

If all else fails, just say it's for de-ka-ray-shun...

seems like you are not the only one with this problem. I've got the same one, for the longest time I had thought that it was my ps/ac belt slipping but once a friend of mine was sitting in rear seat and he pointed it out, that the sound was actually comming from the rear. So I took a ride in the back seat while my friend drove, and It was definetly from the exhaust. Later, I got out and asked my friend to rev up the car quickly a few times... and it was from my muffler.. there isn't any leaks or anything. I've also got a stock exhaust.

The whistle noise is so loud that it actually hurts my ears, and quite a bit embarassing to be honest.

anyways.. I'm thinking that changing the muffler would help, but not for sure. I just don't wanna waste money and change unwanted things.

mine does it too but the sound just comes from my intake. People ask me all the time if I am turbo but sadly i have to say no. There is a lower nipple thing on the bottom of my intake and on a lot of intakes because the 95s required it but i just put a breather filter over it and it sounds cool. There are supposed to be 2 little nipple things, 1 for the blow by thingy attached to your valve cover and another one that is lower.

yea, when i had my CAI, sometimes it almost sounded like a turbo spooling at WOT.

well i got a question for the guy with the new TB, did it whistle before u got the new TB or just start afterwards. Im really convinced it has something to do with our TB's. Cause it is soo ear peircing at WOT my friend drove it around last night while i was in the parking lot and damn it sounds just like a turbo. The guys i hang with thinks its cool as shit. I don't see any reason to be embareassed, no-one that owns a DSM should ever be embareassed of their cars (with a few exceptions) but i was wondering out off all the ppl with this sound... has anyone ever had the sound just go away?? maybe because u replaced a part and it dissapeared?? And i was kinda thinking if i do get an exhaust the sound could just get amplified by the megaphone effect of the exhaust. You guys with the same sounds let me know whats going on..

my shit sounds like a turbo or SC getting its spin on from inside the car. I have no idea what it is. Everyone says air.

Mine has the same sound to it, except it's not as loud as you're decscribing yours to be. From what I understand, it's the sound of the air not going through the factory pipe and being quieted down by those ripples on the factory intake pipe. Also, when the air hits the partly open throttle body, it makes the hissing/whistling noise. From what I understand it is normal. You did say yours was very loud so you might want to look for a vaccum leak somewhere first. Does it increase with rpms?

well mine is not coming from the engine bay.. cuz I've reved it directly from the throttle body and there was none.

Yup it gets louder as the rpm increases..

well I'm having my muffler changed in a week or two.. I'll let you guyz know if it fixes it.

Maybe an exhaust leak somewhere then? Check for leaks along the pipe and where it meets the muffler.

yea i've also revved the engine straight from the throttle cable. and it just wasn't the same the sound just wasn't as pronounced. not to sure but the sound really only is loud while im moving like it's more the air velocity??? but ya it gets loud and high pitched the faster i go.. i was still hoping that guys that have had this problem ever resolved the problem when they swapped something out, or had the sound start after installing a certain part?? Seems like this is a semi-normal sound, any of u guys ever had the stock air-box and then switched to an intake pipe?? cause i bought mine with a 3" pipe on there with a crappy bend so i swapped it out for a nice "chrome" injen.

haha my car makes that noise too... definately sounds like it's coming from the back of the car though. i usually get it around 2-3k or so. can't tell after that b/c the exhaust drowns it out i think. it only does it under load too. i guess it's a kinda common noise then... doesn't really bother me. sounds kinda neat. my car grew a turbo when i wasn't looking i guess. :)

I also have the same problem but from the engine bay a Bov sound comes in and yes im N/t but the whistling noise does come from the exhaust I had a guy tell me my turbo was going out and to have it checked out lol I just went along with it and told him I was going to hehe oh well. Back to the noise that makes the Bov sound I hear from other ppl that its usually their Alternator or some other part, this noise came in after I redlined I still have no idea what it is,its been like this for about a week or so. Any info on what this could be?
